An incredible exploration to one of the world's last pristine natural habitats. The Okavango Delta (or Okavango Swamp), in Botswana, is the world's largest inland delta. The area was once part of Lake Makgadikgadi, an ancient lake that dried up some 10,000 years ago. Today, the Okavango River has no outlet to the sea. Instead, it empties onto the sands of the Kalahari Desert, irrigating 15,000 km2 of the desert. The Okavango delta is both a permanent and seasonal home to a wide variety of wildlife which is now a popular tourist attraction. Species include African Bush Elephant, African Buffalo, Hippopotamus, Lechwe, Topi, Blue Wildebeest, Giraffe, Nile crocodile, Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Brown Hyena, Spotted Hyena, Greater Kudu, Sable Antelope, Black Rhinoceros, White Rhinoceros, Plains Zebra, Warthog, Chacma Baboon, and the endangered African Wild Dog. The delta also includes over 400 species of birds, including African Fish Eagle, Crested Crane, Lilac-breasted Roller, Hammerkop, Ostrich, and Sacred Ibis. The Okavango and Moremi reserve remain one of the best safari locations in Botswana with an estimated 200,000 large mammals in and around the delta are not year-round residents.

Itinerary

Day 1 Okavango

The Okavango is a labyrinth of lagoons, lakes and hidden channels covering an area of over 17,000 square km and the largest inland delta in the world. Trapped in the parched Kalahari sands it is a magnet for the wildlife who depend on the permanent waters of this unique feature. Sometimes called a 'swamp', the Okavango is anything but. Moving, mysterious, placid, gentle and beautiful, from a wide and winding channel it spreads through tiny, almost unnoticeable channels that creep away behind a wall of papyrus reed, into an ever expanding network of increasingly smaller passages.

This flight departs from Maun and travels to Okavango, Botswana.

This afternoon, after tea you'll join up with others at the lodge for your afternoon game drive. In the Moremi one can experience excellent savannah game viewing as well as bird-watching on the lagoons. There are also thickly wooded areas, which are home to the shy, and rare, Leopard. To the northeast lies the Chobe National Park which borders the Moremi Game Reserve. You'll be out for a few hours and enjoy a traditional sun-downer before heading back to the lodge.

Peeking out from under a lush green woodland canopy, Camp Moremi, in the Xakanaxa area of Moremi Game Reserve, is a truly hidden gem. At the point where the life-giving waters of the Okavango Delta meet the vast plains of the Kalahari Desert, Mother Nature has created a sanctuary of Mopane forests, open grasslands, seasonal floodplains and riverine habitats, resulting in one of the most magnificent and welcoming animal environments in all of Africa. Teeming with wildlife, guests enjoy a prime location in the Moremi Game Reserve. For an authentic and personal safari experience, Camp Moremi accommodates just 22 guests in East African-style individual safari tents, each situated on a raised teak platform with private adjacent facilities and viewing deck. Each tent includes private ensuite bathrooms and showers, and special features include "his and hers" towel robes. Feast on African regional dishes of grilled meats and fresh produce. Later, take a night game drive and prepare to be fascinated by the area's wildlife. Otherwise, spend time in the cocktail bar and enjoy the views.

Day 2 Okavango

This morning you'll meet up with others at the lodge for your game drive. Home to nearly 500 species of bird (from water birds to forest dwellers), and a vast array of other species of wildlife, including buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, jackal, impala, and red lechwe and African Wild dog. You'll usually be out from the crack of dawn until about 10:30 am.

After a relaxing morning you'll meet up with others at the lodge for your afternoon game drive. Who knows what the afternoon will bring, mammals are great but you'll become a birder after spending time in Botswana. This area is most famous for its raptor populations - Martiale Agles, Secretary Birds, Bateleurs and a whole host of little Raptors comprise the main feature of this area. There are wonderful water birds to be found along the Khwai river and this river is fairly open and makes for easy birding, birds to look out for are Purple Gallinule, Saddle Billed Stork, Black Stork, Kingfishers, Slatey Egret and a whole host of little Waders.

Day 3 Okavango

You'll be up early again this morning to join up with others at the lodge for your game drive. If you're lucky you may get to see the elusive African Wild Dog. You're guide will introduce you to all aspects of this incredible area.

Day 4 Okavango

You will be collected from your camp and transferred by boat water level dependant to Camp Okavango.

All game-viewing activities are conducted by experienced guides and include exploring the Okavango Delta by mokoro or motorboat and tracking the larger game species on guided nature walks on the many surrounding islands.

Enchanting Camp Okavango sits at the heart of the Okavango Delta on Nxaragha Island. Nxaragha Island lies in the heart of the permanent Okavango Delta, assuring a year-round water wilderness experience. Shaded hammocks, reading benches and a delightful sundeck and plunge pool provide relief during the hot midday hours, whilst an elevated observation platform affords stunning views of the tranquil floodplain's. In addition to boat and mokoro trips, bush walks on the islands are possible.

Day 5 Okavango

The Okavango Delta is of course flooded for much of the year and when it is, you can experience serene silence at the gentle pace of a poled mokoro excursion along the narrow Delta channels. Just sit back and relax as they glide through lily ponds on local dugout canoes while they get eye to eye with a buffalo as it laps water from the river, watch crocodiles sunbathe on the banks or cruise past a pod of hippos as they lie in a pool. Fish eagles, frogs and fabulous lilies form much of this experience, but more frequently it is the quietness and gentle pace that makes its impression on you after a mokoro morning.

Today you'll have plenty of options, a walking safari is just one of them. Professional guides accompany you as they teach you about the bush from a different perspective, up close and personal with the environment. A walking safari is the perfect way to awaken your senses where you can touch, feel and smell the African bush while listening to the various interesting stories the guides have to tell. Walks allow you to read the news of the night in the smooth sand of the road. Lion, leopard, elephants, genets and even millipedes are all part of the signs, each with their story to tell. A walking safari is about seeing the small five and the various flora in the area.
