Day 1
Beijing Beijing is China's foremost city and capital for twenty four successive emperors. Some of the major sights include: Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, Great Wall and Summer Palace. The complete range of Chinese cuisine can be found in the capital, and evening entertainment is superb. Day 2
Beijing Enjoy the insights and anecdotes of your world famous Explorer-in-Residence. Full day private guided tour of Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven with a deluxe lunch (is included). Tiananmen Square was built in 1417 during the Ming Dynasty and stretches a vast 440,000 square meters. The Forbidden City is the world's largest palace complex with 9,999 buildings. The Outer Court was where the emperor exercised his supreme power over the nation. The Inner Court was where he lived with his royal family. Fourteen emperors of the Ming dynasty and ten emperors of the Qing dynasty reigned here until 1924. The Temple of Heaven was built in 1420 AD during the Ming Dynasty to offer sacrifice to Heaven. Enjoy a dinner designed by Chairman Mao Zedong's chef - Mr. Cheng Ruming, and prepared by his students. Mr. Cheng Ruming has been selected as the National culinary master consultant for the Palace Museum and Imperial Kitchen. His guests have included Mao Zedong, state leaders, heads of state along with many important foreign guests. Day 3
Beijing Enjoy the insights and anecdotes of your world famous Explorer-in-Residence. Full day guided tour of the Great Wall at Badaling, about 50 miles north of Beijing at the highest point of Guan'gou gorge. The wall of Badaling has a total length of 3,741 meters with an average height of 8 meters. The top of the wall can permit five horses to be ridden abreast. Includes lunch at local restaurant. Drive to the Ming Tombs - the mausoleums of 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). The mausoleums and necropolis are notable for their palatial architecture. Originally built as the tomb of Emperor Zhu Di and his empresses; The succeeding twelve emperors had their tombs built closely nearby in a grand complex. Day 5
Xi'an Enjoy the insights and anecdotes of your world famous Explorer-in-Residence. Enjoy a full day private guided tour, your first stop is the Terra Cotta Army. Discovered accidentally in 1974, this incredible army of over 7000 soldiers, archers, horses and chariots in full battle array has guarded Emperor Qin's tomb since 210BC. Each figure is unique, and the painstaking repair and excavation continues in 3 pits which are protected inside huge hangars. Enjoy special access to the Terra Cotta Warriors Pit # 1. This is the restoration area, where you will be allowed to stand side by side with the Warriors. Listen to an expert lecture at the museum. Have a basic lunch in the area, before continuing the tour you will visit the Ancient City Wall. The walls, ramparts, gates and watchtowers from one of the oldest and most complete city defences are still around. Day 9
Shanghai Enjoy the insights and anecdotes of your world famous Explorer-in-Residence. Full day private guided tour of Tongli with deluxe lunch. This famous town with thousands of years of history dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC-476 BC) and the Warring States Period (476 BC-221 BC). The city has well-preserved groups of buildings of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It is famous for its large number of covered corridors, lanes and bridges. Its flat terrain is marked by a quiet, natural environment with rivers running through it. The quiet water, handsome bridges, and the reflections in the early morning and the rosy sunset, fishing boats and the glistening lights in the evening, form an amazing poetic picture of the Yangtze River. Tonglis is also home to the China Sex Museum. We also stop in Zhouzhuang, which is located 16 miles south east of Suzhou. Zhouzhuang is surrounded and divided by lakes and rivers, 14 stone bridges cross the rivers, showing distinctive views of the water-town. Suzhou is located in the center of the Yangtze Delta, it is praised as the "Oriental Venice" since 42% of the city is covered by water, including a vast number of ponds and streams. Built in 514 BC, Suzhou is an ancient city with a 2500 years' history. The unique characteristics of the past are still retained; the double-chessboard layout with 'the streets and rivers go side by side while the water and land routes run perpendicular'. With its mild climate and fertile landscape making it an available destination all year round, it is no wonder that Suzhou is called 'paradise on earth'. - Your deposit is due immediately on booking (30% of program price, minimum $250). The balance is due 90 days prior to departure. We accept payment via credit card, certified check, wire transfer or money order.
- Tour quotes do not include airfare to/from the trip start point unless noted on the itinerary
- Cost increases in currency exchange, government fees, taxes, surcharges or hotel/lodge tariff increases between quote date and start date are payable by the client.
- Availability cannot be guaranteed until booked. We will exercise best efforts to book hotels per the itinerary, however, in busy seasons and with client bookings made within 90 days of tour date we may be forced to offer substitutes.
- Cancellations of confirmed bookings 90 days or more prior to departure will receive full refund minus a $350 (per person) administrative fee and any non-refundable paid fees (e.g. non-refundable airfare, cruise or hotel deposits). 60-89 days will be subject to loss of deposit. 30-59 days will be subject to loss of 50% of program price. 29 days or less will be subject to 100% of program price.
