Itinerary

Day 1 San José

San José was founded in 1737 and is a pleasant mixture of traditional and modern Spanish architecture. Places of interest include the Teatro Nacional, the Legislative Assembly building, and the Parque Central, east of which is the Cathedral. The National Museum and the Museum of Gold are also worth a visit.

Upon arrival you will be met by our local representative who will help you locating your vehicle.

Enjoy a private airport transfer with vehicle, and professional driver. The transfer is approximately 30 mins (22km/14mi).

Enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Vista del Valle is in the heart of the Costa Rican Coffee region, located in the district of El Rosario de Naranjo. You can still see our neighbors hand-harvesting shade-grown coffee. On any given day, you might find yourself behind a truck full of the aromatic red beans on their way to the Co-op, or witness the beauty of the coffee fields in the full bloom of tiny white jasmine-scented flowers. Or perhaps take a ride on one of our horseback tours through the town and into a coffee plantation, taking in the vistas of the Central Valle and the surrounding mountains and volcanoes. We can see 4 volcanoes from the property and from a nearby ridge we can even see Arenal Volcano.

Overnight at Vista del Valle Plantation Inn.

Day 2 Arenal

Arenal contains an active volcano, and also the only dwarf cloudforest inCosta Rica. The crater of the volcano is 1.5km (1mi.) wide and contains a hot-water lake that changes color from turquoise to green to gray. It is also a whitewater rafting center with routes on the Rio Toro and Rio Sarapiqui.

Transfer from San José to Arenal Hotel. Please note that this service is shared - there will be other people on this scheduled transfer. The total transfer time is approximately 3.5 hours (150km/93mi.).

Hotel Silencio del Campo means literally the silence of the fields, and that, it is. The village-like setup of large, roomy cabins is located a short distance from the town of La Fortuna in San Carlos, right at the foot of the Arenal Volcano. A scrumptious menu is offered for breakfast, and there is a restaurant onsite. Feel free to wander into town, though, as one may be curious about the area's culinary options. Many pass the time swimming, which is an experience all guests enjoy immensely. There are also a number of other activities to get involved in, such as zip trekking.

Day 3 Arenal

Waterfall repelling is known as "canyoning". You will be picked up from your hotel and begin your adventure with a 30-minute 4x4 drive into the tropical rain forest outside the town of La Fortuna, in the shadow of the Arenal Volcano. This adventure includes 5 rappels, 4 of which are alongside or right in waterfalls, and one dry rock face. After this sensational adventure you will return to the base camp to enjoy lunch. Return to the hotel after the tour has finished. You are required to be in good physical condition to participate. Morning departure, duration 4 hours approx.

Recommended list of items to bring: easy dry clothes, bathing suit, secure shoes (sports sandals and water shoes are best), change of clothing for after the tour and sunscreen.

This park is located at the base of the Arenal Volcano and is filled with wildlife including monkeys, toucans, coati and a large variety of bird species. Conclude the tour at the Springs Resort - soak in the hot mineral baths and relax. After a soothing soak in thehot springs, enjoy a lovely dinner at The Springs Resort, prepared in a colonial-style rustic kitchen. Enjoy the local cuisine for a true authentic experience. Return to your hotel in the evening. Afternoon departure (approx. 3:45pm), duration 6 hours.

Day 4 Arenal

The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge and the Rio Frío are humid areas considered to be among the richest in biological diversity inCosta Rica. Here you can find a great variety of resident and migratory birds, plus iguanas, sloths, turtles, caimans and three different species of monkeys. The tour starts when we pick up all “Nature Lovers” from the hotel in a very comfortable bus for the 1-½ hour transfer to Los Chiles, a culturally mixed village only 4 km from the Nicaraguan border. Here your boat waits for your river adventure, a 2 ½ hour floating safari through tropical rain forest and pasture.  An experienced English - Spanish speaking guide leads the tour. Some birds are residents in the area and it is possible to see hundreds of them, especially during the dry season.  Watch for anhinga (also called snakebird), wood storks, roseate spoonbill (which can often be seen feeding at the river’s edge), the jabiru - the largest bird inCentral Americaand very endangered - and  the olivaceous cormorant, which makes its nest in the area. Along the river we can see howler monkeys, spider monkeys, white-faced monkeys, three-toed sloths, caimans, Jesus Christ lizards (named for its ability to run on water) and turtles.

This daytrip includes a typical Costa Rican lunch, regional fruit, natural juices and coffee, all served for your comfort at our new Restaurant Río Frío; canned drinks, natural juices, bottled water and cookies are also included during the boat tour. Departure: 7:30am. Approx. duration: 8 hours.
