Itinerary

Day 1 Bergen

Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, and is located on the south-western coast of Norway. Its city centre is situated among a group of mountains known as "De syv fjell" (lit. The Seven Mountains). Bergen is an important cultural center in its region and was one of nine European cities honored with the title of European Capital of Culture in 2000. The main reason for Bergen's importance was the trade with dried cod from the northern Norwegian coast, which started around 1100 CE. By the late 1300s, Bergen had established itself as the center of the trade in Norway. The Saxon Hanseatic merchants lived in their own separate quarter of town, where Middle Saxon (“Middle Low German”) was used, enjoying exclusive rights to trade with the northern fishermen that each summer sailed to Bergen. Today, Bergen's old quayside, Bryggen is on UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites.

Day 2 Norway Fjords Cruise

Fjords are found in locations where current or past glaciation extended below current sea level. A fjord is formed when a glacier retreats, after carving its typical U-shaped valley, and the sea fills the resulting valley floor. This forms a narrow, steep sided inlet connected to the sea. The long and rich history of Fjord Norway have left traces and traditions that should be explored by any visitors. Be sure to be told the story of the stave churches, the viking heritage, the codfish trading and the modern era of energy, shipping and how industry transformed some of their tradional farming communities. Cascading waterfalls, deep fjords, breathtaking lakes, islands and mountains. The nature in itself is the most impressive aspect of a cruise in Fjord Norway!

Enjoy a guided walking tour of the city. The places along your route include the Hanseatic Museum which is housed in the oldest and best preserved wooden buildings in Bergen. The interiors date from the 18th and 19th centuries. In times past, the Hanseatic merchants traded mainly with stockfish from Northern Norway and grain from the Baltic countries. Only German merchants were allowed to live at Bryggen during the period of the Hanseatic Office. The Hanseatics were unmarried and had to live in celibacy as long as they lived in the area. The tenements in the Bryggen area each consists of several smaller trade houses, each run by a merchant with a journeyman and apprentices. The Museum depicts what one of these trade houses would have been like in the last years of the German Office at Bryggen. Your tour will also include a visit to the local Fish market and you can take a funicular ride up to the top of Fløyen mountain (320 metres above sea level). The ride itself is spectacular and the views of Bergen only improve the closer you get to the top.

Enjoy a trip on MS Polarlys from the comfort of your own home. Built in 1996 the ship combine small ship atmosphere with space, style and comfort. Choose from their wide range of comfortable cabins.
