Unlike the two largest river systems in North America, the Mississippi River (99% US) and the MacKenzie River (100% Canada), which are located within the boundaries of just one country, many of the other large river systems have a fairly equal split of their length between both Canada and the United States, or even Mexico. This allows cruise passengers to of the Mississippi to keep an itinerary focused on exploring US cities, while passengers on the MacKenzie River will be exposed strictly to multiple Canadian port towns. Other large rivers such as the Yukon, Saint Lawrence or the Rio Grande offer up cruise passengers the opportunity to visit port cities in multiple countries along their journey.
