For many, their journey to Nepal would not be complete without a glimpse of the highest mountain on Earth. For some it will be enough to view Everest from the Kathmandu valley rim on a clear day, or to sit in the comfort of a plane seat for the experience. Others however settle only for a more intimate meeting with the last earthly rung on the stairway to the heavens. At an altitude of 5,360 meters (17,585 ft), the Everest Base Camp trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas and is visited by thousands of trekkers each year. You will fly from Kathmandu to Lukla before beginning the morning trek to this base camp. From Lukla, trek upward to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, 3,440 meters (11,290 ft), following the valley of the Dudh Kosi river. The village is a central hub of the area, and food, sundries and even mountain climbing equipment may be purchased here. You will acclimatize here for a day before continuing your trek to Tengboche. Once here, visit the Tengboche Monastery which is one of the most important monasteries of the Khumbu region. The following day, you will continue your trek to Periche, where of you are lucky, you might just have a good sight of Nepal's national bird "Danphe". Near Gorak Shep, you are likely to see Tibetan snow cocks racing happily down the hillside. Relax and gather up your strength for one day before your trek to Lobuche. Start your trek early this day to the Everest Base Camp. You will then trek to Kala Pattar and start your descend back to Periche, Namche Bazaar, and finally to Lukla.
