Day 1
Spoleto Spoleto is an ancient city in Umbria on a foothill of the Apennines. It is 212 km southeast of Florence, and 126 km north of Rome. Dominated by a 14th century castle, and enclosed by medieval walls, the city of Spoleto is a charming town with mazes of twisting streets and cobbled stairways. Start your exploration at the main square and walk up the steep pedestrian boulevard with its shops, artisans and cafes. The ancient Duomo (cathedral) is revered as one of the oldest in Italy, and you can walk across the deep valley on a Roman era acqueduct. Insiders keep this town a secret and you won't find many tourists here - but its superb restaurants and charming locals make it a must-see destination. Includes car rental. Drive from Rome to Spoleto - the drive is approximately 135 km and driving time is approx. 2 hours. The majority of the drive is on highway. A welcome package with your vouchers, a city map, train tickets (if relevant) and any other touristic information that we deem you may find useful will be waiting for you upon your arrival at your first hotel on your trip. Enjoy time at leisure exploring the charming city of Spoleto. Be sure to check out the Duomo which is located on the Piazza del Duomo, at the bottom of a flight of steps below the castle. The castle, a former prison, is now a museum - if you feel like taking a peek. From the Duomo, make your way to the Piazza del Mercato, site of the Roman forum and nowadays the town's main square. Wander down Via Fontesecca, with it's little shops selling pottery and various other handcrafts. Spoleto is all about the quiet, relaxed pace of life. Take a leaf from the locals and enjoy a coffee on one of the terraces and watch the world go by... The hotel dei Duchi (4*), immersed in the green Ancajani park, faces the Roman Theatre, the former monastery of S. Agatha and the valley, breathing the air of history, culture and the arts.
