The Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, are located in Northern Europe along the Baltic Sea. Each country has its own customs and traditions, and the people have remained remarkably stable within the approximate territorial boundaries of the current Baltic states. After centuries of foreign domination the Baltic countries regained their independence in 1991. Today the three countries are liberal democracies and members of NATO and the EU.
