Day 4
Sarajevo Sarajevo is the capital city and largest urban center of Bosnia. Sarajevo is located in the Sarajevo valley of Bosnia proper, surrounded by the Dinaric Alps and situated around the Miljacka River. The city is famous for its traditional religious diversity, with adherents of Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism peacefully coexisting there for centuries. Although settlement in the area stretches back to prehistoric times, the modern city arose as an Ottoman stronghold in the 15th century. Sarajevo has attracted international attention several times throughout its history: In 1914 it was the site of the assassination that sparked World War I, while seventy years later it became the host city of the 1984 Winter Olympics. More recently, Sarajevo underwent the longest siege in modern military history during the Bosnian War. Today the city is recovering and adjusting to a post-war reality, as a major center of culture and economic development in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the morning, you will continue to Sarajevo via Mostar where you will stop for a visit. Mostar was once one of the most celebrated tourist destinations in former Yugoslavia until the events of the Bosnian War overtook the city. The famous bridge held out during the nine month siege, being seen as a symbol of resistance to not only the inhabitants but also to the whole of the Bosnian Serbs. The sight of its final destruction struck a chord with every onlooker. Now, proudly rebuilt, it has helped the city regain its rightful position as a justifiable attraction – from both inland visitors and also for the cruise ships which stop at Dubrovnik on the nearby Croatian coast. Divers still leap daily into the depths below and the streets leading up to the single arch are packed with intriguing shops and lively cafes. The atmosphere here is relaxed, friendly and vibrant although it is not hard to wander off the main drag and stumble across war-torn buildings and crumbling ruins of once proud mansions. A constant reminder of the country's troubled past. You can walk across the famous Stari Most (Old Bridge), recently reconstructed after being almost completely destroyed during the war. The cobbled old town stretches on both sides of the bridge and is filled with shops selling Turkish style souvenirs. Enjoy lunch and later drive to Sarajevo to your hotel. Hotel Hecco Deluxe (4*) is located in the very city center of Sarajevo. It’s placed on top four floors of the only sky rise which is located on main walking area. Building by its self has special cultural and historical heritage and it’s under the protection of Institute for protection cultural monuments. Belgrade Belgrade, meaning 'White City' – is the capital of the Republic of Serbia. Various styles of architecture dominate the city, while its recent resurgence as the leading hub in south-eastern Europe make it a must see destination. It lies on the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. The city has a long history, dating back to the 4th century BC, when the area was settled by Celtic tribes. Later on, it became the Roman city of Singidunum, and relics of that era can still be seen in the city, particularly at Kalemegdan Fortress. After the First World War, Belgrade became the seat of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes later known as Yugoslavia, until its collapse, and it saw violence again in 1999 with NATO's bombing campaign in response to Serbia's actions in the province of Kosovo. This often violent history and outside influence has colored much of Belgrade's evolution, which is evident in its culture and architecture. Often caught between the hammer and anvil of clashing empires, the city has taken on a unique character, reminiscent of both Austrian and Turkish influences, with a unique set of Communist elements thrown in as Yugoslavia was expelled from the Eastern Bloc in 1948. Yet, the city has its own spirit, and in it can be found some not only very unique features, but also a healthy joie de vivre in its café culture, nightlife and often Mediterranean flavor in its view of life. Among the most visited sights are the well known St Sava Church - the biggest Eastern Orthodox Church in the world, Knez Mihajlova - one of the most popular pedestrian-only streets in Belgrade. Meet your driver for a private transfer to Belgrade. The journey will take you through amazing scenery. After arrival you will check-in at the hotel.
