Itinerary

Day 1 Reykjavik

Reykjavík is the capital and largest city of Iceland, and the world's most northern national capital. It is located in southwestern Iceland, on the southern shore of Faxaflói Bay. It is the heart of Iceland's economic and governmental activity.  Today, Reykjavík  is the only metropolitan area in Iceland.   As it is only slightly south of the Arctic Circle, Reykjavik receives only four hours of daylight on the shortest day in winter. During the summer, the nights are almost as bright as the days. It has continued to see population growth in past years as well as growth in areas of commerce and industry.

Relax on your airport transfer in Reykjavik with a private vehicle and driver. Please note that a surcharge may be post billed to you if you require a transfer after 8pm or before 7am.

A welcome package with your vouchers, a city map and any other touristic information that you may find useful will be waiting for you upon your arrival at your first hotel on your trip.

Enjoy a half day tour visiting the most important sights of the City. You will see the old town centre, the Parliament, the Cathedral, the harbour, the Pearl and Höfði house, the summit site of 1986. During the tour you will drive past the city's salmon river (which is proof that Reykjavík is a pollution free capital) and the Árbæjarsafn outdoor folk museum, which offers an interesting contrast to the modern buildings of the most recent part of city, and an outdoor swimming pool in Laugardalur which is heated with water from natural hot springs under the city. Visit the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture museum and Hallgrímskirkja Church (whose steeple is a Reykjavík landmark). The tour includes private driver-guide for the tour and entrance fee to the National Museum.

The Bjork (3*) is a modern hotel perfectly located a few minutes' walk from Reykjavik city centre and the main shopping street. The main bus terminal Hlemmur is very close-by as is the Kringlan shopping mall. Hotel Björk offers 55 spacious and tastefully decorated rooms, all equipped with private facilities, hair dryer, telephone, satellite TV and radio. For something to eat why not pop into the Potturinn og Pannan restaurant for a delicious selection of traditional and international cuisine prepared using the freshest of local produce.

Overnight at Bjork (3*).

Day 3 Reykjavik

On a half day shared tour today, explore a hidden world in and under the lava field in the Blue Mountains located a half an hour from Reykjavik. Walking down into the lava and discovering the marvels that volcanic activity has created in the past is a trip that everyone can undertake. The Leiðarendi cave is a perfect example of an Icelandic lava tube and a unique experience. As you crawl and walk on a journey beneath the surface on your underworld adventure you will see the magical rock formations left behind in the last volcanic eruption. In winter the cave is likely to be filled with glistening icicles of all shapes and sizes, a sight not soon forgotten. Warm outdoor clothing, waterproof jacket and pants, headwear and gloves are recommende as well as good hiking shoes (note: hiking shoes, waterproof jacket and pants can be rented if you let us know in advance). This is an adventurous trip for those that are not afraid of the dark and want to experience first hand how Iceland was created.

Day 4 Reykjavik

Reykjavik is a veritable winter wonderland and there are lots of activities to choose from. Consider sea kayaking  in the beautiful surroundings of Reykjavík city. Alternatively, a great Winter activity is to take a beautiful hike from the outskirts of Hveragerði, the town of hot springs and green house agriculture, into the beautiful valley of Reykjadalur where hot water rushes down the slopes of Hellisheiði mountain range creating natural hot springs surrounded by pure and untouched Icelandic nature. Just the thing for a brisk winters day! ATV tours are also an option and a great way to see the winter landscapes. Please speak to your Sales Advisor if any of these are of interest.

Enjoy a mysterious trip, on a dark night, any time from the onset of autumn darkness until the light nights of spring, you can witness one of the nature's most spectacular displays; the phenomenon which is called the Northen Lights. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, this is a spectacular natural phenomenon, often seen dancing around in fantastic colors across the Arctic sky. The Northern lights originate from the sun, where large explosions and electronic storms throw flares and solar particles deep into space. These clouds of solar particles are caught by the Earth's magnetic field on the south and north poles. The solar particles collide with the atmospheric gases and create this wonderful light effect, known as the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights.

Enjoy the 3.5 hr glacier walk and on the way back, stop at the picturesque waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.
