Itinerary

Day 1 Washington DC

Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia) is the capital of the United States of America. It is a planned city, designed specifically to house the federal government. Its history, beautiful architecture, and excellent cultural centers attract millions of visitors each year. Virtually all of D.C.'s tourists flock to the Mall, a two-mile long, beautiful stretch of parkland that comprises many of the city's monuments and museums, but other city neighbourhoods have their own charms. Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan have superb cafes and the best nightlife. Georgetown has upscale shopping and don't miss the National Cathedral and Zoo.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport transfer with private vehicle and professional driver.

Washington, D.C. is one of the world’s great capitals, and the Mall is the heart of almost every visitor’s trip to the city. This expanse of green, stretching due west from the Capitol to the Washington Monument, is lined on the north and south by some of America’s finest museums, almost all of which are free. Some of the highlights include: Washington Monument: The epitome of a landmark attraction, this 555-foot, 5-inch obelisk on the west end of the Mall is visible from nearly everywhere in the city. Ride to the top for unforgettable views of the District, Maryland, and Virginia. National Gallery Sculpture Garden: take a stroll in the sculpture garden next to the National Gallery of Art’s West building. The huge central fountain becomes a skating rink in winter. Smithsonian Institution Building: Better known as the Castle, this red-sandstone building houses the Smithsonian Information Center. Ride on the old-fashioned carousel in front of the building. National Gallery of Art: Outside of the art gallery itself which is very impressive, you can find one of the country’s largest selections of books on art and art history, along with beautiful posters, prints, reproductions, stationery, and gifts.

Located in the fashionable Dupont Circle area of Washington, D.C., The Courtyard Northwest has re-opened its doors after an extensive $6.5million refurbishment. The hotel will showcase new floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views, of Washington DC

The day is devoted to a tour of the town and the historic battlefield. The Gettysburg Diorama, one of the largest Miniature Military Dioramas in the United States, gives a narrated history of the Battle, accompanied by sound and light effects. The commentary of the tour guides will help you to understand more clearly than ever before the story of the largest battle ever fought on U.S. soil. View Cemetery Ridge where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address. Visit the restored home of George Washington Shriver and see where Confederate sharpshooters were killed - where Civil War bullets and medical equipment were discovered 133 years later. You will stop near General Pickett's, where you can enjoy lunch on your own.

Day 3 Philadelphia

Philadelphia, often referred to as "Philly", is located in south-eastern Pennsylvania on the southern fringe of the mid-Atlantic region. It is the fourth-largest urban area in the United States. Philadelphia was the birthplace of America's modern democracy where the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. The Liberty Bell and Independence Square in Old City are tourist highlights. Center City features the swish shopping of Walnut St, and modern cafes and restaurants around Rittenhouse Square. South Philly features little Italy and the age old question - whether to get a Pat's or Gino's authentic Philly cheese steak sandwich.

Transfer using a local taxi (available and economical).

Sit back and relax on your train ride between Washington and Philadelphia. Train duration is approximately 2 hours on the regular, regional train and an hour and thirty minutes on the Acela high speed train (which is significantly more expensive). There are multiple departures throughout the day. Please let your Kensington Tours Sales Advisor know if you would like to change the type of train you would like to travel on (Regional or Fast speed) and/or class of service and adjustments can be made in advance where needs be.

Transfer using a local taxi (available and economical).

Follow in the Founding Fathers' footsteps with The Constitutional, a free and fun-filled activity for young and old alike. Step back in time to see where The Declaration of Independence and The United States Constitution were created. The 3-mile outdoor journey features more than 30 historical sites in the Independence Mall area, including the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and the National Constitution Center. Pick up a free brochure at the Independence Visitor Center, National Constitution Center, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Betsy Ross House, area hotels and other historic attractions in the Independence Mall area.

Just one mile from central Philadelphia, the Hilton Inn at Penn sits in the middle of the busy Penn campus, adjacent to the bookstore; the university’s museum is a half-mile away. This hotel features an interior designed in the Arts and Crafts style, and a comfortable Living Room with two gas fireplaces and well-stocked bookcases.
