The pleasantly mild Pacific Northwest offers outdoor pursuits as well as cosmopolitan cities (Seattle, Portland). Hawaii is a volcanic archipelago in the tropical Pacific. Oahu is the most populous island, with the capital Honolulu featuring Waikiki Beach. Maui and Kauai are more remote islands with spectacular sights. Alaska is one fifth as large as the rest of the United States and reaches well into the Arctic.
