Brazil has the largest population of black origin outside Africa! However, because the intensive mixing with Europeans and Native Indians, Brazilians with African ancestors may or may not show any trace of black physiognomy. Traces are can be found most easily in the culture and traditions celebrated amoungst the people today. Due to Brazil colonization and slavery beginning in Bahia, the state has the largest concentration of Afro-Brazilians - 80%.

Enjoy a half day guided tour of which includes the history of the European and African history deeply concentrated into the traditions, religion, food, music, and language. Today, we’re going to give you a little taste of all that. During the tour you will visit Pelourinho, the historical center of Salvador, and a symbol of the black movement in Bahia a neighbourhood that will show you lots of African roots, the Afro-Brazilian Museum, housed in the old Faculty of Medicine; the Protetora dos desvalidos Society founded in 1832 to help the desvalidos (Black people abandoned by their dominators for not being useful anymore); the Rosary of Black People Church the only church of the Brazilian Black people or Casa do Benin, a museum with 200 objects and arts from the Benin Gulf, West Africa, where most of the slavers arrived in Brazil.

Enjoy a lovely evening with dinner and show in the historical centre, Pelourinho, a world heritage site. After the dinner experience a wonderful show performed by great local dancers. Experience the strong West African cultural influence into the customs and history of the Bahia and northeast of Brazil, through acting and dances. During the show you will see the following: Capoeira, a pure afro-Bahia martial art and dance, and the percussion rhythms representing the heritage; the African goddess dances representing the Candomble religion and each Orixá representing one force of nature, such as the fire, the waters, the earth; the maculelê dance played by long knives as the maculelê rhythm goes on the atabaque percussion, and two people begin rhythmically striking the knives; the fishermen acting for the gratefulness to the sea Goddess Yemanja (very popular in Bahia for protecting the fishers); the Samba de roda, a variety of the original samba performance, followed also by singing and clapping hands.  The atmosphere is full of energy and rhythm.

Lencois is a municipality in the state of Bahia in Brazil. The town has a well-preserved colonial atmosphere and is the starting point for treks into Chapada Diamantina.

Enjoy a drive from Salvador to Lencois by private vehicle. On the way visit the "Reconcavo Baiano" area, surrounding the All Saints Bay. View the sugar cane, tobacco and cocoa plantations during the drive. Once arriving in Cachoeira enjoy a walking tour of the city. Famous for its colonial past, Cachoeira was an old center for slaves’ commerce in Bahia. Visit the cigar factory and Sao Felix before you enjoy a traditional lunch. During the day you'll visit Lapa Doce Cave (1 km trek inside the cave), Pratinha Cave with its natural clear pool in this beautiful subterranean river and lake complex. Enjoy a traditional lunch from Toca do Pato. After lunch, we trek to the "Poco do diabo" (a big black lake with a 20 m waterfall). Get ready for a short trek up the Pai Inacio Hill, and explore the view of the tablelands before you return to your hotel.

Today we recommend a full day shared tour to the swamp area of Marimbus. Stop in Remanso, a small village where Quilombo settlement took place. Most of the inhabitants of Quilombos were escaped slaves and, in some cases, a minority of marginalised Portuguese, Brazilian aboriginals, Jews and Arabs, and any other non-black, non-slave Brazilians who experienced oppression during colonization. The black community of Remanso still maintains its traditions and roots. After walking in the village, we will embark in rustic canoes guided by locals that will take us through the channels, lakes and rivers of Marimbus swamp. You will view several birds and with some luck will watch other local species such as capybaras, the World's biggest rodents. Enjoy a lunch box at the Roncador Waterfall and spend some time swimming. Meet your 4X4 and drive back to Lencois on the old mining road.
