When we asked one of our recent Kensington travelers what was the highlight of her private guided tour of Japan, she responded with only a collection of pictures – of monkeys!
Located at the heart of the Japanese Alps, close to Nagano lies the Jigokudani Monkey Park. Two kilometres off the road, this picturesque mountain sanctuary is located in the valley of the Yokoyu River which is part of the Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park. These wild snow monkeys head down into the valley during the winter to sit in the warm waters of the hot springs or “onsen.” One only needs to take a look at these pictures to recognize that a visit to Jigokudani is a must on any tour of Japan.
