Andrew Drummond, Africa specialist, thrives on exquisite tastes and has done extensive research on the most opulent properties featured in South Africa. Drawing from his conquest for breathtaking destinations and luxury properties, Andrew’s latest pick is the stunningly beautiful Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. “Grootbos is an idyllic blend of extravagance and nature. Feast on the finest cuisine and wines while watching spectacular sunsets or go exploring the surrounding natural wonderland on foot, horseback or 4x4 drives. You’ll leave this place with truly unforgettable memories of South Africa!”

Many travelers are drawn to South Africa tours due to the country's stunning natural appeal. Diverse wildlife, beautiful scenery and breathtaking landscapes provide for a memorable experience you're unlikely to find anywhere else, and this is especially true at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. Located in Heramanus, this sprawling compound covers more than 4,320 acres and offers one of the most enriching experiences you can have during a tour of South Africa.

Andrew recalls his visit to Grootbos, “the first thing you're sure to notice upon arriving at is the stunning view. Thanks to its location on the coast, the reserve is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life.” There is an estimated 750 different species of plants that call the reserve home, though some of the most appealing aspects of Grootbos reside in the water, where you can catch glimpses of some of the most famous aquatic animals in the world - the marine big five. Andrew suggests hopping on a whale watching boat for chances to see a shark, dolphin, whale, penguin and seal within five or six miles of the shore. For the more daring travelers out there, Andrew recommends taking the plunge with shark cage diving, “it’s a great opportunity to bring you face to face with the ocean's most feared predators.”

While the aquatic adventures offered at Grootbos are a big reason to start planning your trip there, the reserve has much more to offer. Much like the rest of South Africa, the landscape provides plenty of opportunity for exploration, whether you prefer horseback riding or hiking. Grootbos is also home to a number of stunning caves including Klipgat Cave, which Andrew had the opportunity to visit. “Aside from offering a glimpse back at history - approximately 70,000 years ago - the caves offer stunning views of Walker Bay.”

After spending a day out on the boat or exploring the caves, our Africa specialist encourages a delicious meal and a relaxing atmosphere. “Luckily, Grootbos has you covered there as well!” says Andrew who was impressed with the variety of fresh ingredients of every meal that drew inspiration from the local community. Executive chef Duane Lewis and his team create delicious cuisines you'll likely not have tried anywhere else.

Even though you're immersed in the wilderness, Grootbos still offers the comforts of home. Specifically, its Forest Lodge, which was built in 2006, provides you with luxurious suites, each located on the edge of the forest. Andrew is clearly smitten with this 5-star lodge and enthusiastically promotes it, “with a unique blend of comfort and nature, there's no reason not to book your trip to Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. “
