Brazil is a place of many icons; football, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Iguassu, Amazon, Caipirinhas, Samba and Carnaval are just a few examples that epitomizes the South American giant. Recently returned from Rio de Janeiro, we asked Karl Kannstadter to add to the growing list. Our South America specialist had an answer that was top of mind, "the Copacabana Palace has become a pop culture icon in its own right".
As an icon of South America tours for nearly 90 years, the Copacabana Palace offers everything that is to be expected from a luxurious trip to Rio de Janeiro. The hotel has been recognized as the center of tourism in Rio since the 1920s. Now that he's experienced the icon for himself, Karl understands the considerable appeal. "Copacabana Palace combines luxury and elegance in the most appealing way... I was impressed with its all its lush amenities." The state-of-the-art facilities include a swimming pool, beach serve, tennis cour, signature boutique and fitness centre.
The Copacabana contains 222 rooms, all of which offer sterling views of either the bustling city below or the azure waters of the Atlantic. While the rooms are certainly a big draw, Karl maintains that visitors will still want to get out and explore the city. "Situated on the banks of the picturesque Copacabana Beach in the heart of the city, it's the perfect place to experience all Rio has to offer".
Sugar Loaf Mountain (or Corcovado Hill) stands as one of Rio's best known landmarks. This famous peak rises to more than 2,300 feet above the city below, which is accessed by riding the unique Corcovado Rack Railway. Once the summit is reached, unparalleled views of Rio are to be had. "You'll also be right next to the Christ the Redeemer statue!"
For those interested in a taste of local Brazilian culture, Karl recommends the Rio Scenarium. "It's one of the best places in the country to see live music." This historic venue offers the chance to experience all kinds of Brazilian music; from samba and forró to gafieira. "A night out at Rio Scenarium will surely provide you with an experience you won't soon forget!"
Karl recalls how welcoming his return to the Copacabana was after a long day and night out in, "having a meal at the luxurious Pérgula Restaurant - one of the best in the city - is the perfect way to unwind."
