As our Africa expert extraordinaire, Gabrille Nijdam is a catalogue of intricate safari details and secluded luxury lodges. Carefully researched and personally experienced, her list of luxury safari camps is impressive. Making Gaby’s list of picks is no easy feat as her expectations for opulence, comforts and jaw-dropping moments are extremely demanding.
If you’re considering a Botswana tour, our Africa specialist will undoubtedly direct you to Jack’s Camp. “If you’re looking for an oasis that hearkens back to the safari style of the 1940s, these luxury lodgings are your answer!” Situated in the Makgadikgadi Pan, the backdrop of this luxury safari camp is naturally unique and a popular tourist destination. A remnant of Lake Makgadikgadi, which dried up thousands of years ago, this enormous salt pan, is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Jack's Camp brings you face to face with some of the most stunning natural scenery in the world. However, while you may be in the wilderness, the amenities are anything but primitive. The camp was renovated in 2003 and is now outfitted with stylish and roomy tents that come complete with indoor bathrooms as well as indoor and outdoor showers.
Don't let the luxurious amenities fool you, you're still in the middle of the south African wilderness, and one of the many safaris offered through Jack's Camp is testament to that. The flats are home to many unique animal species including the aardvarks, gemsbuck, springbuck and the rare brown hyeana. Most notably, you get the opportunity to walk through the Kalahari Desert, home of the indigenous meerkats.
Aside from all its other opulent offerings, Gaby fondly remembers the food at Jack’s Camp. “After a day out in the bush, you may want to return to the comforts of home, and Jack's Camp's restaurants offer just that.” Whether you want to try some of the camp's fresh tomato and basil soup or roast Botswana beef, enjoying the delicious cuisine prepared by its talented chefs beneath the unfettered night sky of Makgadikgadi Pan is sure to be an experience you won't soon forget.
