Alotau is the capital of Milne Bay Province, a province of Papua New Guinea. The town is located within the area in which the invading Japanese army suffered their first land defeat in the Pacific War in 1942, before the Kokoda Track battle. A memorial park at the old battle site commemorates the event. Alotau is the gateway to the Milne Bay Province which contains some of the most remote island communities in the world. The whole of Milne Bay is noted for its coral reef and scuba diving experiences.
The Trobriand Islands (today officially known as the Kiriwina Islands) are an archipelago of coral atolls off the eastern coast of New Guinea. They are situated in Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea. The group is considered to be an important tropical rainforest ecoregion in need of conservation.
The Tami Islands are a small island group part of today's Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. In the days before European contact, its natives were known throughout the Solomon and South Sea islands for their distinctive wooden bowls, their cult figure carvings, and their ceremonial masks.
The Sepik is the longest river on the island of New Guinea. The majority of the river flows through the Papua New Guinea (PNG) provinces of Sandaun and East Sepik, with a small section flowing through the Indonesian province of Papua. The tribes living along the river are noted for their magnificent carvings and elaborate manhood initiation ceremonies involving scarification of designs of a crocodile on a riverbank.
Jayapura City is the provincial capital of Papua, Indonesia. It is located on the island of New Guinea, situated on Yos Sudarso Bay.
The Banda Islands are a group of ten small volcanic islands in the Banda Sea, and part of the Indonesian province of Maluku. Until the mid 19th century the Banda Islands were the world's only source of the spices nutmeg and mace, produced from the nutmeg tree. The islands have become popular destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling.
Flores is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, an island arc with an estimated area of 14,300 km² extending east from the Java island of Indonesia. The population was 1,831,000 in the 2010 census and the largest town is Maumere. Flores is Portuguese for "flowers".Flores is located east of Sumbawa and Komodo and west of Lembata and the Alor Archipelago. To the southeast is Timor. To the south, across the Sumba strait, is Sumba and to the north, beyond the Flores Sea, is Sulawesi.
Komodo is one of the 17,508 islands that compose the Republic of Indonesia. The island is particularly notable as the habitat of the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard on Earth, which is named for the island. Komodo contains a beach with pink sand, one of only seven in the world. The sand appears pink because it is a mixture of white sand and red sand, formed from pieces of Foraminifera.
