(Canary Islands Cruise)
Let the diversity of the Canary Islands enchant you on this voyage. Gran Canaria, Tenerife, El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera – the two bigger and three smaller Canary Islands initially appear as distinctive silhouettes on the horizon. As you approach, you gradually begin to recognise their shores before finally getting to explore them up close during the evening. Walking along the promenades, through narrow alleyways or alongside the sea, you will get to experience the diverse character of these islands: from cosmopolitan style in Las Palmas to quiet introspection in rustic San Sebastián. The older sister of the tall ship Sea Cloud II, the Sea Cloud, joins you out at sea over the course of two days, as both ships sail through the Canary Islands together, making for a truly magnificent sight.
Cruise Departure Dates:
Nov 13 (2014)
Welcome aboard!Take some time to get settled in to your stateroom, and to explore the length of your ship. Your ship will remain in port overnight, and you'll set sail tomorrow morning.
In February 2001 the Sea Cloud II turned fantasy into reality: Like no other ship, she combines the timeless elegance of windjammers of past with the highest safety standards and the luxurious comfort of modern cruise ships. The cabins and suites have the richest fabrics, woods and accessories. Fine furniture ensures very comfortable living. Sailing romantics will be fascinated while on board, where the 32,150 sq. feet of sails is set by hand – just as on her legendary sister ship, the Sea Cloud.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife (commonly known as Santa Cruz) is a joint-capital and the second-most populous city of the Canary Islands of Spain. Located on the northeast coast of Tenerife, Santa Cruz sits on the Atlantic Ocean. The city also has one of the world's largest carnivals; the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The main landmarks of Santa Cruz include the Auditorium of Tenerife, the Santa Cruz Towers and the Church Counterfoil of the Concepcion. Santa Cruz is a melting pot of diverse cultures that give it a cosmopolitan character.
This morning you have an opportunity to visit the Sea Cloud's sister ship Sea Cloud II, which is also docked at Santa Cruz. At midday, both ships set sail.
El Hierro, nicknamed Isla del Meridiano, is the smallest and farthest south and west of the Canary Islands (an Autonomous Community of Spain), in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. In 2000, El Hierro was designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve, with 60% of its territory protected to preserve its natural and cultural diversity. Like the rest of the Canary Islands chain, El Hierro is sharply mountainous and volcanic.
La Palma is the most north-westerly of the Spanish Canary Islands. Santa Cruz de La Palma (the island's main port) retains many elegant 17th- and 18th-century houses, and produces high-quality handmade cigars made from locally grown tobacco. The most famous structures of La Palma are the minas galerias (water tunnels) which carry the water from sources in the mountains to cities, villages and farms.
La Gomera is one of Spain's Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. In area, it is the second-smallest of the seven main islands of this group. The upper reaches of the island's densly-wooded ravines make up Spain's Garajonay National Park, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inhabitants of La Gomera have an ancient way of communicating across deep ravines by means of a whistled speech called Silbo Gomero which can be heard 2 miles away. This whistled language is indigenous to the island, and its existence has been documented since Roman times.
