Enjoy a predominantly green focused tour with private vehicle, driver and English speaking guide that circles the active central volcano Hengill which is located just a few kilometres from Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik. Despite having last erupted approximately 2,000 years ago Hengill is still very much active - a fact made evident by the numerous natural hot springs, colourful steam vents and fumaroles that dot the surrounding landscape. First stop will be at the geothermal plant of Hellisheidi where you will learn a little about geosciences, geothermal technology, the environment and the history of the area. Continue to the town of Hveragerdi located on top of an old magma chamber which accounts for the abundance of hot springs that bubble and hiss all around this unique little community. You will make a short stop at the geothermal area in the centre of the town, where you will take a stroll amongst the hot springs. The area also has a small greenhouse where you can view a small variety of plants and vegetables being grown. Take the short walk (20 meters on paved surfaces) from the geothermal area to a local restaurant where refreshments will be served. Leaving Hveragerði follow the river Sogid passing the hydropower station Ljósafoss which has been in operation since 1937 and head to the UNESCO site of Thingvellir. As you approach Thingvellir, you literally drive from one continent to another as you cross the neovolcanic rift zone that slices through Iceland from northeast to southwest. You will have time at the viewpoint to soak up a little of the nation’s history for it is here that the world’s first parliament was formed in 930. Onwards passing Iceland’s largest natural lake, Thingvallavatn to the view point located on the lower flanks of the volcano. Gaze over the countless hot springs that continuously belch their sulphur rich deposits over amazing scenery. The drive back to Reykjavik takes you through a lunar-like landscape of volcanic phenomena and other. Entrance fee included.
