Pre-dating the Roman Empire, the Tuscania region has been the cradle of the Etruscan civilization. While there is much evidence of the existence and impact of the Etruscans, the roots of the civilization are still cloaked in mystery. Heading north from Civitavecchia, you will enjoy the warm colors of the Etruscan countryside as you make your way to Tuscania in a private vehicle. This typical village stands at the top of a rocky hill overlooking the Maremma region. Tuscania dates back to the 9th-century BC. Although a terrible earthquake destroyed parts of the village in 1971, Tuscania's Etruscan and Renaissance buildings have been beautifully restored and still reflect the Etruscan history. You will enjoy a walk with your guide through the narrow cobblestone lanes of this charming village and also take in the views of the surrounding valleys. Leaving Tuscania, you will proceed to a local family-owned farmhouse that produces olive oil, vegetables, jams and local products. On arrival, gain insight into the history of olive oil production and enjoy sampling of two different oils with typical bruschetta bread, tomatoes, homemade jam and honey, all accompanied by local wine and liquors. Relax before your return journey to the ship docked in Civitavecchia.
