Arusha is a city of northern Tanzania surrounded by some of Africa's most famous landscapes and national parks. Tarangire National Park is probably one of the least visited of the northern Tanzanian game parks, and retains a real air of undiscovered Africa, particularly in the south of the park. Just a two hours drive away from Arusha, it lies a short distance to the south east of Lake Manyara and covers an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometres. It is named after the Tarangire River that flows through the park.

Hanging off the edge of the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater, which is considered a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits the opulent Crater Lodge. On the eastern side of the Serengeti in Northern Tanzania, the lodge is an astonishing example of accommodations somehow built in the great African wilderness. It comprises three separate camps totaling 30 suites of the highest standard and most breathtaking views. "The Ngorongoro Crater is often called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ‘8th Natural Wonder of the World’. A massive extinct volcano, the sheet walls drop thousands of feet to a "Noah's Ark" of animals on the verdant floor below. Large herds of zebra, buffalo, antelope and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist.

The crater is roughly 20 km/12 mi wide and 600 m/2,000 ft deep, once you've reached the top of the caldera it takes about 45 minutes to descend to the crater floor. Some 20,000 mammals of size live there, including about 20 black rhinoceros, making the crater the best place in Tanzania to see the rhino. The crater floor also has one of the highest carnivore densities in the world. Sabora Plains Tented Camp is in a massive private reserve aside the Serengeti Park, on the Serengeti Plains. Previously thought to be part of the gazelle tribe, Impalas have been found to be so different that they are now classified as their own sub-family status. When frightened or startled the whole impala herd starts randomly leaping to confuse their predator. They can jump distances more than 10 meters (33 ft) and 3 meters (9 ft) high. Leopards, cheetah, lions and wild dogs prey on impala. Impala can reach running speeds of approximately 50 to 55 mph (80 to 90 km/h) to escape its predators. This annual migration through the Serengeti and Masai Mara is one of the safari highlights of Africa. The wildebeest migration moves in a basic clockwise direction throughout the year in Serengeti eco-system and up into Masai Mara from July to October. The herds are accompanied by zebra and Thomson's gazelle and are stealthily hunted by leopard, lion and hyena.

Dar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania. It is also the country's richest city and a regionally important economic centre. There are a few sights in the downtown though it is not known as a tourist city but rather a gateway. Located near the island of Zanzibar, a fast ferry is an interesting ride. With the departure of the seasonal rains (summer) and the onset of the dry season (winter), the environment becomes progressively drier. In response, wildlife concentrates along the Chi, Lukula and Luwego Rivers. The dry conditions allow for easy navigation throughout the entire Lukula Selous area, both by vehicle and foot. Vegetation is low, and water is limited, providing easy spotting. Walking along the river's sandy embankments, crossing from side to side gives unrivaled access to tracking. Fly camping (4 night stay) is at its prime in this season, with predictable weather. All camp facilities and activities are available. From August to early November, canoeing is dependent on water levels and can be limited.

Only 200 km West of Dar es Salaam lies the mighty Selous Game Reserve, one of Africa’s least known yet wildest conservation areas. At an unbelievable 55,000 sq km Selous is almost twice the size of Belgium and four times larger than the famous Serengeti in the North, covering 5% of Tanzania’s land area. The Selous’ ecosystem as a whole is made up of a few conservation areas, namely Mikumi in the North and the Kilombero game controlled area in the West, covering in total over 90,000 sq km of pristine wilderness devoid of human influence. Fed by the mighty Rufiji River, the largest river in East Africa which drains most of South Western Tanzania’s water, this reserve is home to over 1,000,000 large animals and is home to over half of Tanzania’s elephant population. Selous is unique among reserves in Tanzania as it encompasses an area exclusively devoted to tourism in its Northern part, making up for about 10% of the reserve’s total size. Selous has over 2,100 species of plants, 350 species of birds, 60,000 elephant, 108,000 buffalos and an estimated 1,300 of the worlds’ approximately 4,000 remaining rare wild dogs giving guests an opportunity to glimpse all of these exotic animals in true unspoilt wilderness.

Lukula Selous is a unique place, where you will find yourself on no schedule. It is about adventure, discovery and spectacular wildlife. Today, by foot, 4x4 and canoe, you set out to let the whims of the day dictate the experience. You may find Nyasa wildebeest dashing in the open plains, and decide to track them on foot, getting within mere feet of the herd. You may build a hide, and wait it out for the breeding herd of elephant to come to the water's edge. Or perhaps, hike along the rocky ridges absorbing the sheer magnitude of this grand wilderness. Lukula Selous is a private photographic sanctuary of over 300,000 acres that specialises in experiential travel – authentic life changing adventures in Africa’s last great untouched wilderness – the Selous Game Reserve which is 55,000 sq. kms in Southern Tanzania. The weather and environment in Lukula is a constant cycle of dry and wet characterised by two periods of rain that bless the land each year. The short rains usually arrive in December and are quick to fade in January. The long rains commence in mid to late February staying through to early April.
