Hear the wail of the indri echo across lush rainforests; watch playful sifakas dance atop ochre-colored earth; and catch a glimpse of ring-tailed lemurs move nimbly through the trees. In the evenings, relax in cozy hotels and lodges that offer modern amenities and all the comforts of home.

Hike the rainforests of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park past shimmering waterfalls and vibrant flora while listening to the distinctive songs of the indri lemur. Other lemurs may be spotted as well including the red-bellied lemur, brown lemur and lesser bamboo lemur. The park is also home to nocturnal lemurs - brown mouse lemur, greater dwarf lemur, eastern woolly lemur, sportive lemur and if you are a lucky one, you might see the elusive nocturnal Aye Aye. The Lemur is a clade of strepsirrhine primates endemic to the island of Madagascar. The actually word "lemur" derives from the word lemures (ghosts or spirits) from Roman mythology, and was first used to describe the nocturnal habits and slow pace of certain creatures, which applied perfectly to the habitual primates of Madagascar. Shortly after humans arrived on the island of Madagascar some 2,000 years ago, there were some lemurs as large as a gorilla. Today, there are nearly 100 species of lemurs, and most of those species have been discovered or promoted to full species status since the 90's.

Day 3: Andasibe-Mantadia National Park

A private vehicle with driver will be at your disposal for the day.

Begin the day with a hike through the rainforest to discover the natural Malagasy flora and fauna, as well as the famous Indri lemurs. The Indri lemur is one of the largest in size and has a lovey thick black and white coat. The Indri is well known for its loud, distinctive songs, which will help you to locate them within the thick forest vegetation. Other lemurs which can be seen in this area include the red-bellied lemur, brown lemur, and the lesser bamboo lemur. The park is also a place of habitat for some nocturnal lemur species including the brown mouse lemur, greater dwarf lemur, eastern woolly lemur, sportive lemur and if you lucky, the elusive nocturnal Aye Aye. During your rainforest exploration enjoy a stop for some relaxation at a picturesque waterfall. This day tour is filled with beautiful landscapes and a variety of habitual wildlife.

Ranging in size from 30gm (1.1 oz) to 9 kg (20 lb), lemurs share many of the common primate traits, such as divergent digits on their hands and feet and nails instead of claws. However, their brain-to-body size ratio is smaller than that of anthropoid primates, and among many other traits they share with other primates, they have a "wet nose" (rhinarium). Lemurs are generally social and communicate more with scents and vocalizations than with visual signals. Many lemur adaptations are in response to Madagascar's highly seasonal environment.

  • Katie M. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Our Kensington Tour to Tanzania was excellent. All of our accommodations were top-notch, our flights were fantastic, and every single detail was taken care of. We were extremely impressed with how welcoming and knowledgeable our guides were.

  • Neal F. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Best trip ever. Sarah was a delight to work with and answered all of our questions and concerns professionally and courteously. It was a trip of a lifetime and everything was fantastic. Thank u Sarah and thank you Kensington

  • Rachel F. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Kensington Tours gave us a wonderful trip with the best guide and accommodations. They helped us book flights to avoid long drives and answered all of our questions going above and beyond. Thank you for all your help giving my family and I a trip of a lifetime! We cannot wait to go back to Africa and do it again using Kensington!

  • Jeffrey L. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

We wanted the full safari experience and Kensington was able to deliver it. We had the perfect mix of tents and lodges and honestly can say we saw about everything we could have in our time there. Our Kensington guide Elijah was very knowledgeable and friendly. He was basically a member of the family by the end of the trip. The entire trip was planned out perfectly. Thanks to Kensington and we hope to travel with them again in the future.

  • Sarah M. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

We had such a tremendous trip! We covered a lot of geography, plants and animals - both aquatic and land based. Every guide we had was knowledgeable and very personable. When Grootbos and then Madikwe found out it was my husband's birthday - our guide at Grootbos "Nita" arranged a private party for him (and us) and our chef and butler at Little Madikwe, Violet and Patience, baked cupcakes and got a small group together to sing happy birthday - in English and Afrikaans! We could never have seen so much on our own. The knowledge we gained about South African people, places, animals and history made this our trip of a lifetime! Thank you!

  • Sasha T. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

We had the most amazing time on our trip. Very grateful to Kensington for organizing all the pick ups and details so we didn't have to think or worry - we could just enjoy ourselves. Will absolutely recommend this trip to family and friends and hope to use Kensington again in the future for our next adventure. Thanks so much!

  • Kristin C. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

From the minute we landed, everything was taken care of. Every driver and guide we had were very friendly and efficient. The highlight of our trip was our stay at Kapama Southern Camp, everything about this place was amazing. We were all sad to leave and would love to return there in the future. Would highly recommend booking as many people there as possible.

  • Eric W. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Madagascar is a very poor country with spotty infrastructure. We used Kensington for their knowledge of the area and their resources and we are very pleased. Our driver for the trip was very professional and knowledgeable of the area and the guide that we used for the rainforest walks was equally knowledgeable and professional. Bari, our guide, had a passion for the area and wanted to make sure we were able to get the best picture of each sighting. Franco, our driver, had a passion for his country and the sights and he was a definite asset on our trip.

  • Tom B. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Guides were incredibly well-informed and taught my wife and I about the environment, animals, and culture. Our tour would have just been commonplace, without them.

  • Mary R. — July 20, 2016 — Africa

Going with Kensington Tours was a great decision. The transfers between resorts was handled very professionally and extremely smooth. I will plan my next trip to South Africa with Kensington. Money well spent!
