The South coast of Mauritius is where the location where this island nation's history began. The Vieux Grand Port bay was the first port of Mauritius and became the home to the first European visitors, the Dutch whom setup camps here around 1638. Unlike most of the island, the South coast has very little beaches and resorts. The vegetation here is the richest on the island, due to the high humidity prevailing all year round, feeding life to the many indigenous plants and trees. The picturesque Rochester waterfalls are also located in this southern region.
