Marataba is about contrasts. Between the plains and the mountains; between the contemporary and the ancient settlements; between the threat to animals in the world, and the role of Maratabe to be the sanctuary; between city life, and the place where busy people can find inspiration and peace connecting to nature; between private and public partnership, creating a union of the best of both worlds.
What makes the Marataba experience particularly special is that it is a story about nature, animals and people. It is a story about personal commitment and dedication, about putting natural resources to the best use, and about public-private partnership. It started with the commitment of Nelson Mandela, Mavuso Msimang (then CEO of South African National Parks) and Valli Moosa (then Environmental Minister), together with a passionate group of individuals who wanted to make a difference to nature in a sustainable way. This soon became a tradition taken up by the present owner families. Marataba’s history can, in fact, be traced way back to the Stone Age, when people settled in the sanctuary of Marakele to find refuge. Many remains of human Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements can be found in the park.
