Serena Mountain Village is hidden on a coffee plantation, tucked away from the nurturing arms of Arusha. A calm escape from Arusha’s city atmosphere, the hotel is built of 42 guest rooms, each designed as members of a bona fide African village but with all the necessities of your own home. From the shores of Lake Duluti, mountain breath and clean breeze float through the hotel’s grounds, mingling with halos of rich emerald foliage that set the fairytale mystique of this hotel. Restaurants complete the tropical safari aim of the décor, with tasteful dishes marked by local tradition while retaining key dishes favored worldwide. Secreted in the depths of a tree-shaded coffee plantation, wreathed in multi-coloured tresses of tumbling bougainvillea, cooled by mountain streams and strung like a necklace around the shores of an idyllic wooded lake, Mountain Village offers a haven of calm and serenity just outside the hustle and bustle of Arusha, Tanzania’s premier ‘Safari Town’. Nestling in the heart of a coffee plantation on the shores of Lake Duluti, Mountain Village is the perfect place to relax before or after experiencing the adventure of a Serena Safari. The public areas are entirely new with the main building housing the reception, lounge, library, restaurant, shop and business centre. The main building is designed as a country manor house with a colonial theme to it. The main lounge and bar area are fully carpeted with two working fire places and all designed to make our guests feel like they are staying at a home rather than at a hotel.
The hotel has a total of 42 guest rooms, 6 superior rooms and 36 twin rooms. The stone-built rooms are housed in a half-moon of traditional ‘rondavel’ circular dwellings with views over a bougainvillea-cloaked slope descending to the lake’s shores. Each ‘rondavel’, neatly thatched in ‘Makuti’ stems and lined with close-weave basketwork, has been arranged to cluster in a village-style grouping around the shade of an ancient forest tree whilst the lavishly ‘Makonde’ carved doors radiate off the cool of a central flowered courtyard. Charmingly appointed with spacious bathrooms, individual verandas and curved French windows giving views onto the tranquil lakeside beauty, the rooms have been decorated in the traditional safari style and feature net-draped beds, soft lamps, intricately carved furniture and pastel-patterned drapes. The dining room overlooks the lake’s flower-fringed slopes and features an open-air bar area, a relaxed candlelit atmosphere and menu choices that include traditional safari favourites and internationally themed menus alike.
The word ‘Safari’ means ‘journey’ in Kiswahili but since the days of the legendary ‘White Hunters’ a ‘Safari’ has evolved to mean a spectacular bush adventure that takes in sightings of a glorious selection of game, flora, fauna and bird life whilst delivering awe inspiring scenery, show-stopping views and wildlife encounters of the most exciting kind. Serena Safaris operate a fleet of safari-adapted Land Cruisers. Each of our individually-tailored tours is led by an experienced guide. Picnics, mineral water, cool boxes and bush libraries are also provided. Activities at the Mountain Village include morning bird walks around Lake Duluti with the resident naturalist. Take part in an extensive selection of nature trails looping around the lake and through the shaded groves of neighbouring coffee plantations, with picnic stops and a unique ‘coffee tasting’ session. Many choose to take walks and jogs around the lake and plantation circuits or go canoeing.
