Ndarakwai Camp is a permanent tented lodge on Ndarakwai Ranch in Kilimanjaro. With views of both Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru, the camp is nestled in a protected forest of towering fig, and yellow-barked acacias that line the seasonal Ngare Nairobi River (North). The 15 spacious tents are raised on wooden platforms with thatched roofs, and feature mosquito netting and en-suite washrooms. Mealtimes are flexible and can be arranged with your guide and the camp Managers. Picnic lunches, bush breakfasts, and a bush campfire & bar are easily arranged. All meals are fresh from the ranch or grown nearby. Guests can relax in camp during the day, or take in the variety of wildlife and cultural activities that are on offer. In the evening, guests can gather around either of two indoor fireplaces, or an outdoor campfire for snacks and sundowner.
Ndarakwai is part of the Amboseli / Ngasurai Basin eco-system and helps to preserve important seasonal elephant routes. Many species are permanent residents, while others use Ndarakwai seasonally. Candlelight and kerosene lanterns provide romantic evening light at Ndarakwai Camp. All Camp electricity is derived from solar panels – with an occasional top up by generator. The camp recognizes this form of eco-tourism as a viable, sustainable and pro-active means of balancing the needs of wildlife, local communities, and the environment.
Facilities include 12 spacious tents with thatched roofs, en-suite bathrooms with safari-style showers, and a large separate dining area. Ndarakwai combines the best of luxury tented camping with the principles of responsible environmental stewardship. The camp provides hot showers at any time of day, but the water impact must be kept low through collecting rainwater and using compost toilets. Water is heated with twigs and camp waste in fuel - efficient boilers. No electricity is used in the camp, except in the reception area to charge camera batteries and power the wireless Internet.
