Depart from the Selous Safari camp for a walking adventure and arrive at a basic yet luxurious little satellite fly-camp which will have already been set up and prepared. Sleep in small mosquito net dome tents under the starry sky and enjoy hot "bucket" showers and good home cooked food around a fire as the sun sets. A magical experience!
To get as close to nature as possible, a walking safari or "fly-camp" in the Selous is not to be missed. Escape the modern world completely and immerse yourself in pure wilderness and get a taste of safari and adventure the way it used to be done "old style". The most back to basics, natural mode of transport, walking, has been greatly neglected since the introduction of vehicles into Africa. Re live the experiences of some of the worlds greatest explorers by going fly-camping and spending one or two nights in some of Africa's most unspoilt wilderness in the company of an armed qualified guide who will escort you through this magic land on foot, explaining the smaller but no less important details of nature often unseen from vehicles. A truly educational experience and a sensory overload awaits you as you carefully trek through the bush and get a sense of how our ancestors used to get about , a feeling very few people in this day and age can achieve.
The walking safari fly-camp can accomodate a maximum of only six guests. Situated in a grove of shady palm trees lie just three dome-shaped 'fly' tents made of mosquito netting with waterproof flysheets should they be needed in the event of rain. With their comfortable mattresses and crisp linen, comfort - even in this remote corner of Africa's largest Game Reserve - has not been sacrificed, backed up by a fully equipped kitchen to provide fire cooked meals as well as ice cold drinks. Bucket showers and a basin of hot water on a stand outside the tent are reminiscent of the old safari days when despite the hardship of the safari a certain level of service and etiquette was maintained.
Your safari guides will prepare a home cooked meal under the stars.
The fly-camp concentrates mainly on walking. Do not worry if you are not the fittest person as it is not an endurance test and the walks are not marched "military style". However a certain degree of fitness is required, the ability to walk sometimes up to 10 km on flat ground occassionally in hot humid weather. Rest stops are frequent, be it to take in the surroundings or observe an animal. Two walks are conducted per day, a longer (10 km approx) morning walk leaving after an early breakfast at sunrise returning 4-5 hours later in time for a substantial lunch. After a couple of hours siesta in the tents or a hammock guests are straight back into the action for a more relaxed afternoon stroll returning to camp for sunset. The walks themselves are escorted by an armed guide who will teach the basics of survival, tracking, dung identification, medicinal uses of trees, birding and many other aspects of the bush which are often neglected when driving in a vehicle.
