Matemwe Lodge

One of the very few boutique lodges on the north coast of Zanzibar, Matemwe Lodge has perfected the island paradise experience. Offering superb diving and snorkeling, and beaches of the finest white sand, Matemwe's secluded location and famed relaxed atmosphere makes it the ideal place to unwind. Fresh seafood, refreshing cocktails and relaxing massages are just some of the laid-back daily routines of Matemwe's guests.


    The lodge consists of 12 beautiful bungalows, built from local materials and surrounded by lush gardens. Relax on the hammock or the couch and take in the splendid Indian Ocean air from the comfort of your own private veranda. These spacious rooms are equipped with a king size bed and an extra single bed. Each bungalow has a large bathroom which is elegantly decorated using local themes and colours featuring a walk-in shower and a deep bathtub. Although mosquitoes are rare, all rooms are equipped with a large mosquito net for added ambiance. Other amenities include housekeeping, private bathroom, bathrobes, complimentary toiletries, hairdryer and iron/ironing board (on request), desk, sofa bed, and a double sink.         Matemwe Lodge Restaurants

        The open-air restaurant overlooks the ocean and has a tranquil lounge area. Seafood is the specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of African and European flavors. Dinner offers a choice of main courses with fish, meat, and vegetarian options. Matemwe has a multi-level swimming pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar.

          Matemwe Lodge Activities

          The Matemwe Lodge offers a wide variety of water sports and activities including ocean cruises, snorkelling, scuba diving, and kayaking. Visits to the neighboring village can be arranged for those who want to explore the local Zanzibari culture and village life. Day-trips can also be arranged to the historic centre of Stone Town, Jozani Forest or Prison Island or, simply relax along the beaches. Watch as Ngalawas, fleets of traditional wooden sailing boats, pass by Matemwe - delivering a dream for any photographer. The lodge is a daily stop for the fishermen who sell fresh crab, lobster, and fish to Matemwe for lunches and dinners. Enjoy this sight at early morning, when fresh coffee and delicious cookies are served on your veranda. In the evening, the full moon rising out of the sea is a serene and romantic experience.
