Day 4: Hwange National Park

Home to countless elephant, numerous lion prides and rare antelope such as sable and roan, it offers excellent game spotting opportunities around the many waterholes found throughout the Park. Your stay includes two game drives daily with highly qualified rangers as well as bush walk options.

Hwange National Park is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe, an area of 14,651km2. Formerly occupied by the San bushmen, the Nhanzwa, and latterly the royal hunting ground for Matabele king, Mzilikazi, the area was finally gazetted for wildlife conservation in 1928. The park is close to the edge of the Kalahari desert, a region with little water and very sparse, xerophile vegetation. Most of the park is underlain by Kalahari Sands. As a result of it's location, seasonal wetlands form grasslands in this area. In areas without rivers, grassy pan depressions and pans have formed. Some of these pans fill with rainwater, while others are fed by natural groundwater seeps. Many of the pans are additionally supplied by water pumped from underground by park authorities. The park has a huge diversity of landscapes, vegitation, and game viewing.

A haven for over 100 mammal and 400 bird species, the park protects populations of all of Zimbabwe’s endangered species, elephants numbering in excess of 20,000 (up from around 4,000 when the park was proclaimed). Large prides of lion and buffalo are frequently seen here and you have a good chance of spotting leopard and rhino in addition to cheetah and spotted hyena. The wild and woolly brown hyena also occurs here and is something of a rarity. It is the only protected area where gemsbok and brown hyena occur in reasonable numbers. The population of African wild dogs to be found in Hwange is thought to be of one of the larger surviving groups in Africa today. Other game include herds of zebra, African water buffalo, impala species, giraffe and a wide variety of birds, just to name a few.

Head out today with your expert guide for another game experience - this time by foot! Hwange is great for guided bush walks accompanied by qualified and professional guides. The park is littered with colours from all its seasonal wild flowers that emerge as the first rains begin, and as the grass dries out, the large herds of buffalo, zebra and elephant are in abundance.

  • Alicia H. — June 30, 2016 — Africa

Riad Salam! I cannot say enough good things about our accommodation in Fes! We loved our room with its stunning Moroccan tile work and brass chandeliers and we marveled at the gorgeous interior courtyard while enjoying breakfast each morning and relaxing by the pool each evening. Our guide in Fes, Omar, was magnificent. He knew everyone and negotiated zealously for us with each vendor. Our cooking class at Maison Bleu with Chef Zohar was very fun! We loved following Zohor around the souks, collecting ingredients and she was an excellent teacher in the kitchen. In Marrakech, we had the best time at Kasbah du Toubkal. Our guide was incredibly patient and let us lounge in the mountain sun and air for hours!

  • Patrick P. — June 30, 2016 — Africa

Charlie, our guide, was absolutely the best! We had my wife's mom (74) and dad (75) along, and he helped them thru the rain forest and every obstacle that we encountered. Barry, our guide in the rain forest, spotted so many lemurs and chameleons, and he also helped Charlie with mom and dad. Both were a wealth of information about the animals and the island. We all really enjoyed Lemur Island, where the lemurs would hop on your shoulders. I was amazed how poor the people of Madagascar were, and how poor the roads were; but Charlie navigated thru Tana and the road to the rain forest like a pro. The hotel and lodge we stayed at were first rate, and the service from the staff was excellent! Thanks to all connected to Kensington Tours for putting together such a wonderful trip!

  • Janet M. — June 15, 2016 — Africa

My experience with Kensington Tours for my Safari was the best planned trip I have ever taken. The coordination, experience and knowledge of personnel during our visits excelled. I had high expectations but it exceeded all my thoughts!

  • Padma P. — June 15, 2016 — Africa

We were very happy with all the arrangements that were made for us. We will always use you for all our future trips.

  • Eve T. — June 15, 2016 — Africa

We cannot emphasize enough how amazing our guide was, both in personality and knowledge, and how much he added to our trip. We truly enjoyed spending time with him, which is a very good thing since much of that time included some very long car rides! We also loved how most accommodations had so much personality and life to them. We much prefer unique smaller accommodations that almost feel hand-crafted over a more standard experience you can get almost anywhere.

  • Beth N. — June 15, 2016 — Africa

THE TOUR WAS EXTREMELY WELL ORGANIZED. VERY PROFESSIONAL AND KNOWLEDGEABLE GUIDES. Customer service throughout out South Africa was awesome!

  • Toni L. — June 15, 2016 — Africa

Truly one of the most incredible experiences of my life's travels! Kensington guides were extremely knowledgeable and personable. I could only address them as guides for a few hours as they quickly became my friends. You customize every aspect of my trip to Rwanda and Tanzania to my liking. I could not have asked for more. Grateful for the professionalism and attention to detail as I traveled by myself as a female, always feeling safe. I wish I could find the words for accolades that adequately describe my journey.

  • Joel G. — June 08, 2016 — Africa

Our guide, Fidelis was phenomenal. Not only a skilled tracker but a walking encyclopedia of history, geology, geography, animal behavior etc. Marc, our trip planner, was patient, understanding and pro-active in suggesting trip elements that he felt would meet our needs. Fantastic.

  • Nikhita D. — June 08, 2016 — Africa

Our guide Steve was absolutely amazing. Have highly recommended the trip to many family and friends

  • David C. — May 19, 2016 — Africa

We were very pleased with the accommodation, our tour guide, the tour bus and all other aspects of Kensington's tour in Morocco. Well done!
