Kep is a coastal city and is a famous seaside resort in Cambodia's Kep Province. With 12 months of sunshine, it is just 173 kilometers southwest of Phnom Penh. The city was founded in 1908 during French colonial rule and was originally named Kep-sur-mer. It was renovated into a beautiful seaside resort in 1960s during the Prince Norodom Sihanouk’s Sangkum Reastr Niyum regime. The name Kep is derived from the French words le cap, or cape in English meaning a point of land that juts into water, especially a headland significant for navigation. Many of the French-style villas are overgrown and run-down, but Kep is slowly being redeveloped and tourism is reemerging. The colonial influence is noticeable in the city's Provencal-style architecture and French cuisine. In Kep, tourist can enjoy a variety of tourist attractions such as natural mountains, evergreen tropical forest, mangroves, islands, sea grass coral reefs, pure sea air, beaches and last but not least the seafood markets.
