Day 2: Beijing

You will be picked up from your Beijing hotel and taken on a half day private guided tour of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City with a Scavenger Hunt in the Forbidden City. Before entering the Forbidden City, your guide will prepare the children some pictures of the Forbidden City, where the children will need to find the real objects during their visit. After finding the objects, the guide will offer an explanation or tell them a short story about it. Tiananmen Square was built in 1417 during the Ming Dynasty and was the front door of the Forbidden City. The present square stretches a vast 440,000 square meters and features Tiananmen Tower, Monument to the People's Heroes, Great Hall of the People, and Mao Zedong Memorial Hall. The Forbidden City is the world's largest palace complex with 9,999 buildings across 74 hectares, surrounded by a six meter deep moat and a ten meter wall, and divided into two parts. The Outer Court was where the emperor exercised his supreme power over the nation. The Inner Court was where he lived with his royal family. Fourteen emperors of the Ming dynasty and ten emperors of the Qing dynasty reigned here until 1924. Lunch is included in the tour.

Enjoy a private deluxe dinner at a fine local restaurant, then settle into your VIP seats for the Legend of Kung Fu Show, featuring a group of the best Kung Fu practitioners in China, where the age of the performers averages at 17. The costumes, stage design, and special effects are of high standard and run by China's finest directors and designers. The story line is about a child found by monks, whose dream is to become a Kung Fu master. Searching for enlightenment the boy is often challenged and tempted. The Legend of Kung Fu consists of an exceptional and dazzling combination of modern dancing, acrobatics, and Kung Fu. The performers do not speak, but English subtitles enable the audience to follow the plot.

Day 3: Beijing

Enjoy a full day private guided tour of the Great Wall at Mutianyu, located 45 miles northeast of Beijing. This section winds along lofty, cragged mountains for 1.4 miles and holds a prominent place in Chinese military history. Construction was started in the Northern Qi Dynasty (550-577) and was restored in the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). There are abundant natural springs which feed a great variety of verdant plants and ancient trees. Built mainly from granite with 8 meter walls and 5 meters wide at the top, it is notable for its 22 watchtowers, suggesting a significant military importance. Next, you will visit The Temple of Heaven which was built in 1420 AD during the Ming Dynasty to offer sacrifice to Heaven. The most magnificent buildings are The Circular Mound Altar (Yuanqiutan), Imperial Vault of Heaven (Huangqiongyu), and Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest (Qiniandian), which are connected by a wide bridge called the Sacred Way. The temple is surrounded by a park which is a popular meeting point for local people and is often considered a highlight of visiting the temple. Lunch is also included in this tour.

Day 4: Beijing - Xi'an

Enjoy this half day private guided tour of the Hutongs of Beijing. The word "hutong" originates from "hottog" which means "well" in Mongolian, and means a lane or alley - or in fact the passage formed by lines of siheyuan (a compound with houses around a courtyard) where old Beijing residents live. Beijing's hutongs are inequable ranging from a few feet to over 30 feet wide. The longest has more than 20 turns, though most have a slant, half turn, or are cul-de-sacs "blind hutongs". The gray-tiled houses and identical crisscrossing deep alleys give you the impression of being in a maze - fun to walk through, but be careful not to get lost. This tour includes exploration of the hutongs with a tricycle/rickshaw. Our suggestion is to finish the tour at the bar/restaurant cluster of Houhai rather than return to the hotel. Lunch with a local family is included.

Meet your driver for an airport transfer with a private vehicle and English speaking guide.

Fly from Beijing to Xi'an. Flight time is approximately 2 hours.

  • Ronald F. — August 10, 2016 — Asia

As usual, Kensington exceeded our expectations and every detail was handled by your company. It makes traveling to a strange country so easy and we get to experience an in-depth visit that gives us a true look into the country. The people of Japan are very friendly and gracious. thanks.

  • Hans M. — July 15, 2016 — Asia

From start to end of the program was excellent - flights, guides, drivers and hotel accommodations.Had never experienced from other Travel Companies. My my Family and I thank Kensington Tours personnel for a job well done.

  • Steven T. — June 15, 2016 — Asia

We found Kensington of great assistance in helping us extend our recent trip to Japan with days on private tour to Nagasaki, Hiroshima and Miyajima. Astrid Di Paolo was our Kensington travel designer and was a delight to work with - very conscientious and attentive to every detail of our trip.

  • Sydney L. — June 08, 2016 — Asia

This trip was unforgettable. I start medical school in July and wanted to do one last family trip before starting school (and no longer having summers). China and Tibet were unbelievable. The Holy Lake and Great Wall pictures alone were worth the money spent on the trip. My father loved the monasteries in Tibet as well. He is a history nerd and loved hearing the stories from 600 AD and witnessing the great stupas. Nepal was amazing as well, although I would have loved to have seen the sites before the earthquakes. All of our guides were friendly, knowledgeable and took the time to make sure we had enough water and were safe. Would recommend Kensington Tours to all of my friends and will definitely book again using them!

  • Ma. Cecilia J — June 01, 2016 — Asia

    Everything was great!

  • Loretta H. — May 19, 2016 — Asia

Very enjoyable trip. We had a private guide and driver. All very knowledgeable. Always met us at the airport and even waited for us when our flight was delayed. The price was well worth the money spent. Thank you Kensington Tours!

  • Marnie T. — May 19, 2016 — Asia

The local guides were very sweet, knowledgeable and accommodating to our itinerary desires.

  • Diana S. — May 19, 2016 — Asia

The local guides in Japan were all so pleasant and very knowledgeable of the areas we visited. They often shared personal stories which further enhanced our enjoyment of the tours.

  • Byron M. — May 19, 2016 — Asia

That was the single greatest experience of my life.

  • James G. — May 19, 2016 — Asia

We were very impressed by the quality of the tour. Everything worked as planned - our guides met us on time every time, the hotels were well selected and met our needs precisely, the itinerary was well chosen. We would like to call out the expertise and friendliness of our guides. They added immensely to the success of the trip. All of the guides were great but we want to especially express appreciation for the guides in Ho Chi Minh City and Angkor Wat. They helped make us feel like we were speaking with friends about the countries and places they lived in.
