Travelers on Vietnam tours hoping to uncover the ancient native sights should head to Hoa Lu, Vietnam's former capital. Although its former grandeur is little more than a memory today, the Hoa Lu's accessible location makes it a great natural landscape to explore.
The region's rocky outcrops, while historically used to fend against attacks from neighboring enemies, is today an excellent spot to explore. Visitors looking for a true challenge may want to try the slopes of the nearby Yen Ngua Mountain, which are easily visible from the city's ruins.
A more urban trek can be had by exploring the remains of Hoa Lu's two temples. Both ornate in design, their large pillars still hold a level of regality when passed through. The Dinh Tien Hoang temple, which is dedicated to the Dinh dynasty, features gorgeous bronze bells as well as a statue of former Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang and his three sons.
Guests wanting to pay their respects to the emperor can hike to his tomb, located on a small hillside the overlooks the city. Providing the best vistas of Hoa Lu, this spot provides the best example of why the former capital's spot was chosen.
