Islington is a very special, small, luxe hotel located in the outskirts of Hobart with a long history and a large and delightful garden, affording unique and stunning views of Mount Wellington. Decorated with fine art and furnished with antiques, Islington appeals to those who desire the very best in life, surrounded by personalised service, presented in an atmosphere of serenity, luxury and tranquillity. Built in 1847, Islington is an outstanding example of Regency architecture recently restored to showcase the property’s original glory and up-dated to include the little necessities and amenities our forebears over-looked, such as a glass enclosed mountain-view pavilion and a cellar stocked with the finest Tasmanian wine.
The Islington Hobart offers eleven sumptuously furnished guest rooms, many with distinct characteristics reflecting an eclectic mix of a bygone era coupled with contemporary elements. Each room has a distinctive design flourish, celebrating one of the many early Tasmanians who provided inspiration for the hotel. Hotel features include individually styled sitting, an a la carte restaurant and extensive wine cellar.
The epitome of grand living at Islington Hotel Hobart is found within the comfort of The Signature Room. A Beidermier themed suite commanding an entire corner of the original house whose centre-piece is a huge Austro-Hungarian Empire bed facing across from a fireplace with working gas fire. Luxurious furnishings upholstered in lush chocolate silks from Jim Thompson complete the look. On one side French doors lead to the front English inspired garden while on the other, is a luxurious marble bathroom with heated floor deep bath, separate toilet and rain shower stall.
Located within the post-modern west wing of the lodge, Garden rooms gaze directly up to the mountain through rhododendron gardens. French doors open directly onto a flagstone terrace leading to the gardens and pond beyond.
Two larger rooms are almost junior suites with Juliet balconies.
Interiors are serene and relaxing – luxury furnishings in chocolates, tans, sage and gold meld with a luxurious marble bathroom with heated floor, featuring separate rain shower and deep bathtub encased in jewel box marble shoji screen walls.
Tucked away at the top of the stairs is a cosy retreat of a room that is lovingly designed to be the perfect hideaway. The intimate space is dressed in comfort colours that wrap around you with warmth and love and offers a view through the attic window that takes you straight to the top of the mountain. There’s even a marble bathroom with rain shower and bath tucked into this ingenious space.
Our focus is always seasonal, local and organic where possible. Our menu changes daily to allow us to serve only the freshest local ingredients with an emphasis on the best Tasmania has to offer. You may find line caught deep sea fish, oysters fresh from the water that day, grass fed Black Angus beef, tender spring lamb, wild mushrooms or local black truffles depending on season. The restaurant at Islington is remembered with pleasure by visitors from around the world.
Wander through the extensive gardens, populated by a landmark willow over 100 years old, a mulberry tree, cherry blossom and an ancient yew set amid plantings of exotic blooms designed by renowned garden landscaper Andrew Pfeiffer. Guest may also enjoy a picnic lunch or afternoon tea.
A glass roofed pavilion with wood burning fireplace. Ideal for gazing at the mountain, contemplating the reflections on the pool or taking in the grandeur of the garden.
