Indulge in the luxury and comfort of Wharekauhau’s Cottage Suites high above the thunderous surf of Palliser Bay. Whilst taking in the dramatic vistas, you are able to relax in absolute bliss and forget the outside world. Be at one with nature amongst the sheep that dot the pastures and enjoy deep sofas, fluffy pillows, heated marbled floors, and homemade cookies are just a few of the luxuries that are associated with our 13 Cottage Suites.
Throw yourself into a bygone era and enjoy the grandeur and gracious lifestyle of the Edwardian times reflected in Wharekauhau. As you wander into the grand lodge, what catches the eye is the awe-inspiring view over Palliser Bay, framed perfectly from every vantage point. Each room in the main lodge has a different feel, from large open lounges to smaller and more intimate areas such as the Palliser Room or Drawing Room. The antique furniture and over-sized fireplaces throughout the lodge capture the grandeur of yesteryear. Behind Wharekauhau’s achingly-beautiful farmland surroundings is a hugely successful farming operation that put it on the map in the mid-1800s. One of the oldest Romney studs in the land, the vast 5,000-acre estate is dotted with Romney and Texel sheep roaming among the Speckle Park, Angus and Simmental beef cattle breeds.
In true Wharekauhau style, natural materials are used throughout the cottage suites, including clay tiles, pebble mosaics, plastered walls, rich New Zealand wool carpeting, cotton bed linen and hemp curtains. All guest cottages have the option to interconnect, so families and friends travelling together have the advantage of being able to interconnect with other rooms booked in their group. Room features and amenities include king-sized bed or two twin beds, open gas fireplace, under floor heating, heated marble floor in bathroom, heated towel rails, double spa bath, walk-in wardrobe, homemade cookies, iPod music docking station, LCD television connected with satellite TV, electronic safe, cordless telephone, hairdryer, wireless internet access, iron and ironing board, and a well-stocked minibar.
Morning aromas of fresh coffee and homemade breads greet each guest at the country kitchen, where every day a sumptuous continental buffet, coupled with an extensive cooked menu awaits. Lunch is not bound by any limits. The experienced culinary staff is willing to arrange lunch either in the Country Kitchen, outside in the sun-soaked Courtyard, as a picnic around the property, or even a private Barbeque complete with personal chef anywhere on the estate. It is easy to spend the entire day out and about enjoying the property and the surrounding region. Wharekauhau’s can pack any sized picnic hamper that you and your group require. Don’t be shy to ask us if you’d like us to deliver it and set it up in a prearranged location to save carrying it with you. Wharekauhau’s dinner menu changes to reflect the seasons and features contemporary twists on New Zealand classics such as Beef, Crayfish, Duck and of course the famous Texel Lamb.
