NOTE: Travel in Egypt often involves early-morning starts, designed to avoid crowds and the hottest midday hours. It can be hot, especially in June, July and August, but there is virtually no humidity and evening temperatures cool off dramatically. Egypt is a moderate secular state, well used to hosting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. While you will want to avoid revealing clothing, loose shorts and short-sleeved shirts are fine for both genders on board your Nile cruise and while sightseeing. « Show Less

Day 4: Luxor - Nile

This morning you will meet up with your guide and explore some of the most incredible sites of the country. You will visit the Valley of the Kings where you will have the chance to explore three tombs including the famous Tutankhamun Tomb (King Tut's Tomb). For a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, tombs were constructed for the kings and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt). The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite modern Luxor. Then it's off to the nearby Valley of the Queens and also the recently renovated mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Hatshepsut was the second pharaoh of the eighteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt. She is generally regarded by Egyptologists as one of the most successful pharaohs, reigning longer than any other woman of an indigenous Egyptian dynasty. The tour includes a visit to the huge Colossi of Memnon which are all that remain of the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III.

Enjoy an evening of entertainment including local music.

Day 5: Nile

Visit a unique Greco-Roman temple dedicated to two gods: Sobek, the crocodile god, and Haroeris, the sun god. The Temple in Kom Ombo (also known simply as Kom Ombo Temple) dates from about 180 BC, during a period known as the Ptolemaic era, and had some additions built on to it during Roman times. It stands right on the bank of the Nile between Edfu and Aswan. The temple is unusual in that it is a double temple, with one side dedicated to the god Haroesis and the other side to Sobek. The design is almost perfectly symmetrical, with two side-by-side sanctuaries and two parallel passageways leading through the outer parts of the temple. The right side is dedicated to Sobek-Re (the crocodile god combined with the sun god Re), along with his wife (a form of Hathor) and their son Khonsu-Hor. Sobek is associated with Seth, the enemy of Horus. In the myth of Horus and Osiris, Seth and his followers changed themselves into crocodiles to escape. The ancient Egyptians believed that by honoring the fearsome crocodile as a god, they would be safe from attacks. The left side is dedicated to Haroeris, the "Good Doctor" (a form of the falcon-headed god Horus the Elder) along with his consort Ta-Sent-Nefer, the "Good Sister" (another form of Hathor).

Day 6: Nile - Aswan

Visit the Nile-side Temple of Horus, the falcon god, built in 230 BC by Ptolemy III. The Temple of Horus in Edfu (also known as the Temple of Edfu) is considered the best-preserved cult temple in Egypt. This is partly because it was built later than most: in the Ptolemaic era from 237 to 57 BC. Despite its later date, it reflects traditional pharaonic architecture and so provides an excellent idea of how all the temples once looked. Edfu is also very large: the second largest in Egypt after Karnak Temple.

This half day tour begins with a visit to the impressive Aswan High Dam. The water which was collected behind created Lake Nasser, the world's largest artificial lake. View the Temple of Philae, dedicated to the Goddess Isis, on the island of Agilika, stopping at the “unfinished obelisk,” a practical demonstration of the methods used by ancient craftsmen to create impressive monuments.

Enjoy an evening of entertainment including local music.

A transfer in private vehicle with English speaking driver between Cairo and the airport is provided.

Begin the day with a tour of one of the most ancient ruins in Cairo; explore the remains of the Fortress of Babylon. First built by the Persians around the 6th century BC, these ruins are indeed Cairo’s oldest original structure. Within the confines you will find the Church of St. Sergius, where the Holy Family is reported to have stayed, and the Hanging Church, the seat of the Coptic patriarchate for centuries. Visit the Church of Saint Barbara, a charming monument commemorating a 4th century local saint. End the day with a visit to the Coptic Museum.

Enjoy a buffet lunch at a great local restaurant.

Petra is the treasure of the ancient world, and the rock-carved rose-red city is full of mysterious charm. Indeed, it was "designed to strike wonder into all who entered it". Petra is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. Admired then for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, this remarkable city of grand buildings carved into massive cliffs evokes wonder to this day.

  • Szilvia L. — July 15, 2016 — Egypt & Middle East

Loved the whole tour, every day of it was fantastic! The Egyptologists and tour guides, Mohamed Gamal, Mohamed Saad, Wael Magdy Tito, are very knowledgeable and helpful. We felt very safe and protected. Our drivers, especially Yasser, were the best drivers. Cairo traffic is crazy but they managed every situation. We are experienced travelers but this trip was the one we will cherish the most. Let's not forget our security personnel as well. They were discreet and vigilant everywhere we went. Egypt is a beautiful country with beautiful people and wonderful food. History is amazing and Kensington Tours made a long time life dream come true for us! Thank you Roudayna for planning our trip!

  • John D. — July 15, 2016 — Egypt & Middle East

Interesting places, great guide, wonderful hotel.

  • Gabriele L. — June 27, 2016 — Egypt & Middle East

The trip was seamless, from the airport to the boat to the excursions along the Nile, all of the events were coordinated perfectly. Guides with great knowledge and arrived promptly.

  • Mark C. — June 08, 2016 — Egypt & Middle East

Everything about the trip was fantastic!!

  • Gary P. — May 19, 2016 — Egypt & Middle East

This was our first experience using Kensington. Their online reviews were positive, the website was helpful listing numerous points of interests and options. Our itinerary was based on our list of things we wanted to see and do. All our interests were covered from being met upon arrival, helped through the visa/entry process to check-in for our departure. Our accommodations at Winter Palace, onboard Royal Lilly and the Fairmont Hotel were first rate. The guides exceeded our expectations, one was actually an Egyptologist, my wife loves history and was impress with the accuracy of these men.

  • Megan E. — May 19, 2016 — Egypt & Middle East

This was an amazing trip! Our coordinator Mohammed and guides Sam and Tito were world-class guides. They were well educated on Egyptian history and balanced the trip so we saw the sites but didn't get overwhelmed. No detail was overlooked by Tito and Mohammed. They had wifi hotspots for us, SIM cards, greeted us with a platter of local desserts and went to any lengths to meet requests all while making it look effortless. I mentioned that I love sushi so they took us to a sushi place just for me! Tito surprised us with Turkish coffee and stuffed camels for my nieces without me even asking and he wouldn't accept payment. They were incredibly gracious and welcoming and felt like family members by the time we left. One last thing- regarding security. Most have questioned the safety while I was there but I never once felt unsafe. Having Tito as a guide taking us everywhere made us feel safe. Even as we toured two famous mosques, Tito timed it so that we were there between the calls to prayer to minimize our presence there. This was my first vacation tour and I will definitely consider Kensington again. It was so nice not to have to worry about coordinating all the minute details of a trip which enabled me to relax and just enjoy. Thank you! Mena Tours in Egypt represented Kensington very well.

  • Jeff B. — May 19, 2016 — Egypt & Middle East

I have traveled all over the world and my recent trip to Egypt was the best experience I have ever had! The planning was tailored to my wants, the contacts throughout my trip were always there and made the process seamless, and the accommodations were simply magnificent. All that being said, I cannot say enough good things about the guides. They were FANTASTIC and made each day a truly special experience. Their knowledge and private tours were truly world class. This was a remarkable 9 days and I would recommend Kensington to anyone wanting a special experience.

  • Dana H. — May 19, 2016 — Egypt & Middle East

The guides and drivers taking care of us truly went above and beyond to ensure we had the best possible experience in Egypt. Sam in Upper Egypt was so knowledgeable and passionate about his country and really went above and beyond. I will definitely recommend Kensington tours to all of my friends and family!

  • Dina D. — May 19, 2016 — Egypt & Middle East

Because I was traveling with an elderly friend, I was particularly concerned about the logistical support of a trip to the Middle East. Kensington Tours and their in-country partner agencies immediately dispelled any and all worries. Every step of our journey was expertly organized and managed without feeling at all regimented. The tour organizers who met us at the airports and reviewed our upcoming activities, the drivers, and especially the guides were absolute lovely while being unfailingly professional and responsive to our every question or need. The guides impressed me both with their knowledge and their obvious love for what they do and their own cultural history. I've traveled extensively but always independently. This trip with Kensington Tours was a revelation. Every detail was attended to, and my friend and I could simply sit back and enjoy our wonderful holiday. Thank you, Kensington Tours.

  • Bonnie R. — May 12, 2016 — Egypt & Middle East

I had a fantastic trip! Every detail was taken care of from the moment I arrived right to my departure. I felt like royalty, completely spoiled. As a solo female traveler I felt 100% safe the entire time. My guides were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. It was a trip of a lifetime and I have many fantastic memories. Thank you Kensington Tours!
