Aurangabad is a tourist hub in Maharashtra, surrounded with many historical monuments including the Ajanta and Ellora World heritage sites. The Ajanta Caves are rock-cut cave monuments dating from the second century BCE, containing paintings and sculpture considered to be masterpieces of "Buddhist religious art". Ellora represents the epitome of Indian rock-cut architecture. The 34 "caves" are actually excavated out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills between the 5th century and 10th century, and comprise Buddhist, Hindu and Jain temples. During Mughal times, Aurangabad had 4 main and 9 subordinate gates (darwajas) along its periphery, the most famous and oldest and biggest of them being the Bhadkal Gate near the Naukhanda Palace of Nizams.
