For many, their journey to Nepal would not be complete without a glimpse of the highest mountain on Earth. For some it will be enough to view Everest from the Kathmandu valley rim on a clear day, or to sit in the comfort of a plane seat for the experience. Others however settle only for a more intimate meeting with the last earthly rung on the stairway to the heavens. At an altitude of 5,360 meters (17,585 ft), the Everest Base Camp trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas and is visited by thousands of trekkers each year. You will fly from Kathmandu to Lukla before beginning the morning trek to this base camp. From Lukla, trek upward to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, 3,440 meters (11,290 ft), following the valley of the Dudh Kosi river. The village is a central hub of the area, and food, sundries and even mountain climbing equipment may be purchased here. You will acclimatize here for a day before continuing your trek to Tengboche. Once here, visit the Tengboche Monastery which is one of the most important monasteries of the Khumbu region. The following day, you will continue your trek to Periche, where of you are lucky, you might just have a good sight of Nepal's national bird "Danphe". Near Gorak Shep, you are likely to see Tibetan snow cocks racing happily down the hillside. Relax and gather up your strength for one day before your trek to Lobuche. Start your trek early this day to the Everest Base Camp. You will then trek to Kala Pattar and start your descend back to Periche, Namche Bazaar, and finally to Lukla.

Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, as measured by the height of its summit above sea level, which is 8,848 metres (29,029 feet). The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range, is located on the border between Nepal, and Tibet.
Today, you will travel along the Namche trail to Tashinga, following the classical approach route to Everest. As you wind through the almost level path for about 3.5 hours, you will arrive at a detour point, where after travelling for 15 minutes you will arrive at your resting lodge for the evening.
Trek to Pangboche. Approximate 4 hrs.
En route to Periche, your keen-eye is tested again, as you try to get a good sight of Nepal’s national bird, Danphe. Near Gorak Shep you are most likely to see the Tibetan snow cock, as they race happily down the hillside. The few houses and the gompa of the tiny village of Devuche are off in the distance along the trees to the west, with a nunnery up the hill to the east.
This morning you will head out on a trail which ascends the broad, gently sloping valley from Periche to Phalang Karpo. This location boasts panoramic views of Tawachee and Cholatse, the ideal habitat for snow leopards, and is particularly more renowned for being the area which is reported to be the home of the mystical abominable snowman or Yeti.
The Everest base camp is not an actually determined location, but in fact varies on the explorers; various expeditions have selected different locations for their semi-permanent camp during their assault on the mountain. The trip to base camp, while fascinating, is not spectacular as the ascent of Kalapatthar because there is no view of Everest itself from base camp.
Starting early in the morning, after about one and a half hour walk you will get to see the Khumbu Glacier. The path will gradually become tougher, not due to the incline, but due to the rocky terrain and the high altitude. After about three hours of trekking you will arrive at Gorak Shep, this was the base camp for the 1952 Swiss Everest expedition. Gorak Shep has a small lake that is usually frozen and also boasts several monuments dedicated to climbers who have died during various Everest expeditions. Most of the trekkers reach Gorak Shep by the lunchtime, leaving enough time to climb Kala Pattar and back to Phiriche.
Today you will retrace your steps back to the Namche Bazaar.
