The Kandy House is a unique ancestral manor house providing seclusion and serenity for its guests in a lush, tropical garden setting close to Kandy. In 1804, the last Chief Minister of the Kandyan Kingdom, Ratwatte Adigar, committed an act of “defiant decadence” - he dared to build himself a palatial villa using roof tiles which at that time were decreed only for royal residences. 200 years later, Tim and Sarah Jacobson dared to start the process to turn it into a designer boutique hotel, in partnership with Channa Daswatte: to retain the charisma of this captivating house while taking it to the standard for 21st century guests. The resulting restoration sensitively blends modernized bathrooms with elegant antique furniture, and fresh touches of colour set off the traditional architecture.
There are four Ultra Rooms – Red Spot Duke, Peacock Royal, Indian Admiral and Black Rajah. These are larger and have access onto a verandah with chaise longues, reading chairs, table and other antiques, ideal for more private dining and relaxing.
Dinner might start with Skewer of Paprika & Ginger Marinated Tuna or Carrot & Cumin Soup with Slow-Roasted Tomatoes. Main Fare from Goat Curry or Chermoula-crusted Mullet with Tomato and Avocado Salsa, all rounded off with a choice of desserts. Lunch serves a variety of Salads, Daily Specials, Vegetarian Mezze Plate, Pasta Risotto, or Thai Curry to name a few. Breakfast will typically offer subtle blends of fruit juices according to the season, eggs almost anyhow, pancakes, muesli, cereals and some galvanising sri lankan starts to the day….All with a selection of Sri Lanka’s renowned teas, or coffee.
The Kandy House has its own masseur with 25 years' experience as an Ayurvedic therapist having trained with the Vittahachchi Ayurvedic hospital in Kandy. The therapist also uses energy healing alongside the full body and head massages, leaving guests energized, though calmer and able to attain sounder sleep.
