When it comes to history, few countries can compete with Egypt. The North African nation was home to one of the earliest empires in human civilization and has played an integral role on the world stage for thousands of years. Taking a tour of Egypt offers you the chance to see some of the most compelling historic sites up close, and although there is a long list of appealing destinations, and a few in particular that simply can't be missed.
Egypt is home to many famous ruins - most notably the Giza Pyramids - but the ancient city of Memphis is certainly just as impressive. Memphis is located just south of Cairo and features the remains of many enormous temples and monuments. However, its main feature is the number of necropolises that are spread throughout the valley, the most famous of which is undoubtedly the iconic Saqqara burial ground. The site dates back to more than 4,500 years and is home to the majestic step pyramid of Djoser.
Although Memphis may be famous for its pyramids and necropolises, Luxor, which is located in the southern part of the country, is renowned for its many temples and statues. A good place to start is the Karnak Temple, which is a sprawling complex that was built over the course of several periods of ancient Egypt. The site is impressively well-preserved given it's thousands of years old, especially in what's known as the Precinct of Amun-Re, which is famous for containing a 34-foot statue of Pinedjem I.
Moving further south down the Nile brings you to Aswan, which not only contains some ancient highlights but is also a thriving modern city. However, despite its modern appeal, there is still plenty of historic intrigue in Aswan, especially when it comes to the stone quarries of ancient Egypt. This area gets its fame from the many ruins from the country's storied past that are located there, including an enormous, unfinished obelisk as well as Greco-Roman sarcophagi and a coliseum that is still half-buried in sand. Stopping by the temple on the island of Philae is also a good way to get a taste of the ancient history Egypt is renowned for.
