It's an understatement to say that a tour of Egypt will bring you to some of the most historic sites in the world. The North African nation has been a player on the global stage for thousands of years, and while your immediate thought might be to visit landmarks from ancient Egypt, a building from a different era, the Bab Zuwayla, may be more appealing.
Located in Cairo, the Bab Zuwayla is one of the best preserved Medieval gates situated throughout the city. The southern gate of an enormous wall, Bab Zuwayla was built in 1092 and is one of three remaining gates built during the Fatimid Dynasty. The gate has two tall towers on both ends, and although they were originally used as a way for soldiers to keep a lookout for enemy armies, today they serve a much different purpose.
Provided you pay a small fee, you can climb the steep passage to the top of one of the towers, and when you get there, the view is stunning. The trip brings you only about 65 feet off the ground, but thanks to its position you are treated to a breathtaking panorama of Cairo.
