Morocco tours have quickly become one of the most popular travel options in the world. Thanks to a concerted effort on the part of government officials, the number of visitors to Morocco increased to 10 million in 2012, nearly twice the amount it was just 10 years ago. Given the wide variety of landscapes, historical intrigue and unique culture, it's no wonder that a large number of travelers have chosen to take a tour of Morocco. There are many cities to hit along the way, but you should make a point not to miss Tangier.
The first thing you'll notice about Tangier is likely to be its location on the northernmost region of Morocco. Situated on the Strait of Gibraltar, visitors are presented with picturesque views of the confluence of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Furthermore, the city's location has also helped foster a unique atmosphere you can't find anywhere else in Morocco. This relaxing vibe is particularly on display in the city's many cafes, including Cafe Hafa, where you can sip a drink while overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar.
Of course, there's more to Tangier than its ideal location. The city is also home to many historic landmarks, including the Dar-el-Makhzen - which served as the Sultan's palace. Built in the 17th century, the building is currently used as a museum housing some of Morocco's best pieces of art, but the structure is impressive in its own right. There are a number of other highlights in the city, including the Tangier Grand Mosque and the Hotel Continental.
Head to the square
Some of the most appealing destinations in Tangier are its squares, which are often bustling hubs of activity. This is certainly the case with Grand Socco, which is located in the heart of the city. Most experts recommend you visit Grand Socco during the evening when it springs to life. Walking through the square will bring you face to face with vendors selling everything from secondhand goods to fruits to spices. Whether you purchase something or not, you'll get to enjoy one of the truly unique Moroccan experiences, and that will certainly leave a lasting impression long after you've returned stateside.
