Brighton has managed to escape the stereotypical image of an English seaside town and has reinvented itself into a centre of the arts. This is reflected in the sheer amount of original independent shops, cafés and restaurants that line the streets of North Laine and the 17th century Lanes. Since Regency times the city has become a popular holiday destination and is full of wonderful examples of architecture from this period. A visit to the Brighton Pavilion is a must, even if just to wander through its grounds and marvel at the unusual architecture. And of course no trip to Brighton is complete without a walk along the pier and promenade.
