Embark your ship in Southampton, near London, and sail to IJmuiden, a port city in northwestern Netherlands, providing access to the renowned canalled city of Amsterdam. Cruise onward toward the vast coastline of Norway, making calls to port at various cities with rich Nordic pasts. The Washington Mayfair Hotel is a distinguished hotel with a history dating back to 1913. Much renovated since then, the hotel retains however, its original Art Deco exterior including some beautiful but understated bas relief and decorative features on the upper floors. The hotel was opened just before the start of the Great War and was immediately taken over by the Ladies United Services Club who used the property as a base as they assisted at Victoria Station in the repatriation of wounded soldiers returning from the Front. Stavanger is commonly referred to as the Petroleum Capital of Norway. Despite its age, dating back at least to the Viking Age, Stavanger only grew to its position among the most important Norwegian cities in the second half of the 20th century, after oil was discovered in the North Sea. Today, the city is marked by noticeable foreign influences as a result of the presence of several major international oil companies. Stavanger also houses the NATO Joint Warfare Center. Norway's oldest cathedral, Stavanger domkirke, is situated in the city centre, right next to Breiavatnet lake. The two most popular recreational areas are situated around lakes, namely Mosvatnet and Stokkavatnet.
Oslo is the capital and most populous city in Norway, renowned for it's status as the world's most expensive city. Many of the city's landmarks were built in the 19th century, with all of the early 17th century and prior landmarks being destroyed in a series of 14 destructive fires, eventually forcing the King to order the city of Oslo to be rebuilt in its current, modern day location.
