National Archaeological Museum of Arts
Temple of Olympian Zeus
Day 2: Athens
Enjoy a 3 hour walking tour accompanied by docents (guide) who will lead your tour. Visit to the National Archaeological Museum designed for children, you’ll look at ancient Greece through the lens of the gods and heroes that populate Greek myths. The world-renowned collection of the National Archaeological Museum includes exhibits that span more than fifteen centuries: Mycenaean swords and jewelry, exquisite Archaic statues, Classical tomb stones, and Hellenistic and Roman artifacts. It is considered one of the most significant collections of ancient Greek artifacts in the world. Begin in Syntagma Square (Constitution Square) and proceed to the Archaeological Museum by taxi or hired car, as it’s a little ways from the center of town. You will begin with the Greek gods, looking at their statues in the sculpture section of the museum. First talk about Zeus, the father of the gods, and hear about how he came to power by defeating his father Cronos. You will then discuss the literary evidence and the connections between Greece and the ancient Middle East. The discussion will be very question-based: What do you know about the Greek gods? What do you see in this statue? What does this hero seem to be thinking? You will look at statues of other gods (Dionysus, Hermes, Poseidon, etc.) and talk about their mythological lives. Among them you will see the famous statue of the frivolous god Pan making advances to Aphrodite, while she is threatening him with her sandal and is defended by her son Eros. You will finally talk about Demeter, her daughter Persephone, the Eleusinian mysteries and Greek concepts of the Underworld. After the gods you will talk about heroes, like Heracles and Theseus. Continue to the Mycenaean section of the museum and see the famous ‘mask of Agamemnon’ and other exhibits from the Mycenaean period. By the end of your tour you will have a very rich understanding of how Greek statuary, pottery, and other artifacts reflect the living culture of the ancient Greeks. Entrance fee to the museum not included.
The National Gardens is a big green garden with paths, snack bars, picnic benches, a duck pond, and a big playground. Run down the length of the National Gardens, past the Zappio, and you'll find the ancient ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

Enjoy this surreal landscape as your guide explains the creation and history of the volcano and the last eruption which lead to the destruction of the island of Santorini. The tidal wave created by the eruption was of such an immense magnitude, it destroyed the thriving city of Knossos on the island of Crete. As your caique enters the narrows of the two lava islets, Palea and Nea Kameni, the colour of the water changes from dark blue to sulphur green. In the distance, admire the breathtaking sight of Thira Town with its white washed houses clinging precariously on the rim of the Caldera.
