Pecs is a pleasant small university town located on the slopes of the Mecsek Mountains in the south-west of the country, close to its border with Croatia. It has largely escaped the ravages of both communist-era architecture and modern-day mass tourism. In 2000, the Early Christian Necropolis of Pecs was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2010. Pecs always was a multicultural city where many cultural layers are encrusted melting different values of the history of two thousand years. Hungarians, Croatians and Swabians still live in peace together in economic and cultural polarity.
