Day 2: Rome

This morning, discover beautiful Rome by foot as you enjoy a private, 3-hour guided walking tour. Don't forget your camera, as there will be plenty of photo opportunities when you visit the Spanish Steps, Piazza Colonna, The Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and Navona Square.

Rome is a great place for shopping. There are five main shopping areas: Spanish Steps & Via dei Condotti - This street is one of the richest streets in Italy and one of the best streets for shopping in Rome. The Via Dei Condotti is home to Italy's top designer stores. Via Del Corso – This busy pedestrian street runs from Piazza del Popolo down to Piazza Venezia. It is home to the famous shops like the Ferrari flagship store and Swarowski Crystal. Trastevere – This rather bohemian area of the city with its many winding streets is great for shopping and getting lost in. Be sure to check out the outdoor food market in Piazza San Cosimato where locals bargain with the vendors (7am -2pm).  Viale Marconi and Porta Portese- Viale Marconi is very good for shopping and is particularly popular with young trendy Romans. A bit out from the city center, it can be reached by talking the Metro Line B to Marconi. It is about 15 minutes away from the Colosseum. Porta Portese is the famous Roman flea market which takes place every Sunday from 8am until about 2pm. Another place of interest for food and market lovers is the Piazza Vittorio where a mesmerizing array of fresh foods, fruits, fish and meat, run by people from all over the world is displayed. Piazza Navona & via del Governo Vecchio – The well-known Piazza Navona is a great place for art lovers, as the surrounding streets contain lots of art galleries and antique shops.

Day 3: Rome

Experience the Rome of emperors, citizens, charioteers, and gladiators on a morning guided small group tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum, and continue after lunch to the Vatican Museums to see one of the most magnificent art collections in the world.  Start at the Colosseum, once able to seat up to 50,000 spectators.  Begun in 72 A.D., the arena was finished 8 years later, providing the scene for wild entertainments between man and beast.  Continue to the Arch of Constantine and Arch of Titus, and walk the Via Sacra from the Colosseum past some of the most important sites of the Roman Forum to Capitoline Hill.  Explore the center of political life in Ancient Rome, and then stop for lunch in the Baroque splendors of Piazza Navona. In the afternoon, skip the lines and visit the Vatican Museums in the Vatican City and see Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. Your tour of Rome’s legendary art and architecture starts at the Vatican Museums, housing the most important ancient art collection in the world in some 1,400 rooms. With more than 65,000 works of art, it would take a lifetime to see everything, but your guide will lead you to the best galleries to see frescoes, statues, tapestries, and historical maps by masters such as Botticelli, Pinturicchio, and Perugino. Then continue to the Sistine Chapel to admire Michelangelo’s magnificent ceiling and Last Judgment. You’ll also learn about other Sistine Chapel painters, including Botticelli and Ghirlandaio. This tour includes guide, entrance fees and headsets, lunch in restaurant, pick-up and drop-off.

Day 4: Rome - Naples - Sorrento

Meet your private driver and vehicle for a train station transfer.

Depart by train from Rome to Naples. Approximate travel time is 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Meet your private driver and vehicle for a transfer to Amalfi. En route, you'll stop at the legendary site of Pompeii, where a private local guide will take you on a 2-hour visit of this important historic site. Nearly 2,000 years ago, Pompeii was completely destroyed in the catastrophic 79 A.D. eruption of Mount Vesuvius, leaving the ancient Roman city buried under 15 to 20 feet of volcanic ash, and preserved therein. Modern archaeologists have since uncovered the remains of the former city, leaving an incredibly vast, and somewhat somber site to explore. Walk through some of the ancient streets of Pompeii where you can see the baths, forums and villas built by the prosperous Romans over 150 years before the eruption. Marvel at the fabulously preserved fresco paintings which adorn the walls and floors of the villas. See the ancient amphitheaters, gladiator barracks, and houses of former Pompeii residents, before continuing on your drive to Amalfi.

Day 5: Sorrento

Enjoy a full day tour by coach with a shared English speaking guide. The Amalfi drive is said to be one of the most spectacular drives in Europe. The winding cliff top road offers breathtaking panoramic views at every turn. The scenery is superb, looking out over the Mediterranean and along the coastline as the road twists and turns its way toward views of Positano, a town built on different levels cascading like a waterfall from the main road all the way down to sea level. You'll eventually arrive to Amalfi, which was once a thriving Marine Republic, powerful and prosperous, now an amazing holiday resort. The unmistakable cluster of white, tightly packed houses rising up the hillside is dominated by the beautiful cathedral which stands majestically on top of a great flight of stairs leading up from the main square. Spend approximately two hours at leisure here before driving to the picturesque town of Ravello, sitting on the hillside above Amalfi, 1,100 feet above the sea level. It was in Ravello, at Villa Rufolo, where composer Richard Wagner was inspired to create some of his most famous works, with the best views of the Amalfi coastline, looking over to Minori, Maiori and beyond. Journeying back to Sorrento, you'll head over the hills, joining the motorway to Castellammare, and then back along the majestic coastal road.

Day 6: Sorrento - Capri

Today, why not explore the beautiful isle of Capri?

Just off the coast of Naples and Salerno, between Cape Miseno and Amalfi, a great rock soars like a dream, lost in the cobalt blue sea that surrounds it. This Mediterranean jewel is the island of Capri. The intoxicating fragrance of flowers, delicate splashes of colour, recollections of a millennial past and a peaceful charm, shattered only by the shrill cry of seagulls, are just some of the magical qualities of this mythical isle.

It is very easy to catch a hydrofoil (type of boat) from the pier in Sorrento, taking 20-25 minutes. On arrival, Capri Town can also be reached via a short ride on the Funicular (train) from the Port area.

Revel in the breathtaking views upon Mont Solaro - the highest place on the island (589 metres above sea level). You have the choice of either walking there, by taking the narrow street at the beginning of Viale Axel Munthe, or by taking the chairlift. Should you wish to relax and enjoy the splendid view of Anacapri and the gulf of Naples, the chairlift is a great option. The chairlift station can be accessed near Piazza Vittoria.

Take a 1 hour walk to view one of the most beautiful walks on the island. Admire the lonely Church of S.Maria in Cetrella. Alternatively, it is a 12 minute chairlift ride from Piazza Vittoria. While in Anacapri, consider visiting the villa San Michele, located on the north-eastern side of 'Anacapri, 327 metres above sea level. This is where an ancient Roman imperial villa was, whose ruins were preserved by Axel Munthe. They are now to be found in the garden.

Note: Hydrofoil costs approximately 12 Euros per person. A ticket needs to be purchased at the ticket office before boarding the Funicular.

We greatly enjoyed dealing with Kensington, from pre-trip planning, through the experience itself. Our advisor, Julienne Bourgeois was very helpful and responsive. All the arrangements went off without a hitch. We like all our drivers and guides and the trip was well balanced, exciting, easy and fun. All the accommodations were wonderful. It was a memorable trip!
