Positano
Dining in Sorrento
Day 4: Sorrento
Enjoy a full day private tour of the Amalfi coast with an English speaking guide, private vehicle and driver. There are lots of interesting villages and sites in the area that are worth exploring including Ravello & Amalfi and Cetara. Approaching from above Positano, one is greeted by a vista of lemon and orange groves, flowers, trees, small allotments, olive groves and gardens which continues right down to the sea. Positano is completely pedestrianized and a great place to stroll through and enjoy a coffee or lunch (not included). It's buildings cling, in tiers to the rock face and the small houses, all huddling on top of each other, so characteristic of Positano, form the subject of endless photos. The vibrant colors; the white of the buildings, forming a perfect canvas for the bright flowers which decorate the houses, and the small artisans', shops with their multihued cloths, present the visitor with a vista which is almost difficult to believe. The picturesque town of Ravello, some 5km from Amalfi, has a number of must-see sites including the Villa Rufolo, from the XII century, built by the Rufolo's family and Villa Cimbrone, due to their splendor and decor. Both villas have an amazingly beautiful garden to visit. Indeed, from Villa Cimbrone, you can admire one of the best panoramic views of Italy, on all the Amalfi Coast, and on the Coast of Cilento. The pretty town of Amalfi features a series of white houses, most with barrel vault ceilings and built on terraces within a picturesque web of alleys and stairways. The main monument and symbol of the city is the Cathedral of St. Andrew, preceded by an imposing staircase. Further along the coast lies the town of Cetara. For centuries, it was influenced by the financial and spiritual fortunes of the Benedictine abbey in Cava dei Tirreni; nowadays it is dominated by its busy fishing harbor. Depending on time and your preference, the day will be spent visiting these beautiful towns and stopping off at scenic points along the way. Entrance to Chiostro Paradiso included.
Enjoy dinner at leisure in Sorrento. Here are a few suggestions: La Bascilica - Uninterrupted hot food from midday until 1am in this old establishment in the small basilica from which it takes its name. Capri
Day 5: Sorrento
Today, why not explore the beautiful isle of Capri?
Just off the coast of Naples and Salerno, between Cape Miseno and Amalfi, a great rock soars like a dream lost in the cobalt blue sea that surrounds it. This Mediterranean jewel is the island of Capri. The intoxicating fragrance of flowers, delicate splashes of colour, recollections of a millennial past and a peaceful charm, shattered only by the shrill cry of seagulls, are just some of the magical qualities of this mythical isle.
It is very easy to catch a hydrofoil from the pier in Sorrento (it takes 20-25 minutes and costs approx. 12 euros per person). On arrival Capri Town can be reached also via funicolare (train) from the Port area: a ticket needs to be purchased at the ticket office before boarding the funicolare – it’s a very short ride..
Go up to Mont Solaro - the highest place on the island (589 metres above sea level) and revel in the breathtaking views. You can either walk there (by taking the narrow street at the beginning of Viale Axel Munthe) or take the chairlift. The chairlift station is quite near Piazza Vittoria and allows you to reach the top quite quickly while you enjoy a splendid view of Anacapri and the gulf of Naples.
The way back on foot is one of the most beautiful walks on the island. The quite smooth route allows also a visit to Cetrella, where you can admire the lonely church of S. Maria. (12 minutes by chairlift from Piazza Vittoria: about 1 hr on foot). While in Anacapri, consider visiting the villa San Michele, located on the north-eastern side of 'Anacapri, 327 metres above sea level. Here was an ancient Roman imperial villa, whose ruins were preserved by Axel Munthe and are now to be found in the garden.
