Day 3: Oslo - Flam

Meet your driver for a private train station transfer.

Take a train from Oslo to Myrdal this morning. The Bergen Railway is a unique experience on Northern Europe's highest-altitude railway line. One of the greatest challenges is the harsh and changeable weather. The line is exposed to deep low-pressure centers from the west, which can mean strong winds and heavy snow for part of the year. Keeping the railway open demands great effort and technical expertise. Today, skilled workers, effective equipment, tunnels and snow tunnels make the Bergen Railway one of the safest and most comfortable ways of travelling between Oslo and Bergen. The line was voted one of the 20 best railway experiences in the world in 1999.

Take a cog railway from Myrdal to Flåm of the Flåm Railway. (open seating).  The scenic 20-kilometre (12 mi) route between Myrdal and Flam is one of the steepest railway tracks at 1 in 18 (not counting rack railways) in the world and provides some of Norway's wildest and most magnificent scenery. On the ride you can see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls cascade down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains and mountain farms cling dizzily to sheer slopes. There are also a few spirals along the route which allow trains to rise on a steady curve until it has completed a loop, passing over itself as it gains height, allowing the railway to gain vertical elevation in a relatively short horizontal distance.

Accommodation: Fretheim (4*)

Fretheim Hotel is a beautiful wooden building situated at the head of a scenic fjord arm of the famous Sognefjord, dating back to the 1870s. In the historic wing of the hotel, every effort has been made to preserve the old feel of the hotel – in fact it appears much the same now as when it greeted travelers in the 19th century. Guestrooms are comfortable and offer views of the hiking trails and mountains surrounding the property, and some have their own balcony. Dine at the hotel’s restaurant, which serves locally grown and raised ingredients, and has views looking straight towards the fjord. Visit the lobby bar to relax with a cocktail, or visit the garden to grab a coffee at the coffee bar.

Day 4: Flam - Gudvagen - Stalheim

Take a boat ride from Flam to Gudvagen that winds around precipitous mountains, mighty waterfalls and small homesteads that cling to the mountain sides.

Take a short bus ride from Gudvagen to Stalheim.

Accommodation: Stalheim (4*)

Stalheim Hotel is located near Staheim, featuring beautiful views over the Nærøy Valley. Many artists, painters and poets, both famous and not so famous, have through the years found inspiration for great works of art in this dramatic, but at the same time harmonic landscape. Guestrooms are comfortable, and equipped with all the amenities needed for a pleasant stay. At the hotel’s restaurant, enjoy traditional Scandinavian breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets. Whether your prefer to relax on the hotel’s terrace garden and let the nature come to you, or you choose to take advantage of the many hiking trails starting from Stalheim, it is the aim to give guests a good and lasting experience of nature.
