Funchal (Madeira)
The island of Madeira off Portugal's mainland and some 400km from the Spanish islands of the Canaries, off the north western coast of Africa, offers expansive opportunities as a vacation destination. From lush green valleys, to spectacular cliffs and a rugged coastline, and bustling towns, this island has it all. Funchal has the largest population outside of Portugal mainland and has a unique location on the island: a natural "amphitheater" surrounds the city, with gentle slopes beginning at the harbor and rising almost 1200 meters. Spend your days exploring the island with shared guided tours of your choice - from a city discovery, to an exploration of the coastline, gain an insight into island cottage industries, be impressed by the wonderful botanical gardens and experience traditional Portuguese island cuisine as you soak in the atmosphere of local folklore group. Consider extending your stay on the island and incorporating more active or wellness activities - the island lends itself perfectly to both options.
